“Good friendly hostel for the solo traveller”
Reviewed April 5, 2010

I stayed at this hostel for two days, and stayed in an 8 bed female dorm. The rooms were fairly small but there were only three of us in the room. The dorm also didn't have a bathroom; there was a large shared communal bathroom on the second floor.
I arrived earlier than check in, and left much later after checkout, but they stored my luggage for me in a really secure area - it was tagged, and I felt quite safe leaving my stuff there.
They have a small room with a few computers, although you have to pay for internet, and there's some books and couches. There's also a large kitchen with free breakfast - this was all you can make pancakes and porridge.
They ran a tour to Tijuana on the Saturday night; it was $17 and I had planned my stay in San Diego around this - definitely worth the money and a lot of fun. The staff were great, always really friendly and helpful.
The location is also in a great spot, nice and central and close to a tram station.

Solo traveller, 24 years old, female. Stayed here for a few nights in Oct 09 and had a brilliant time. Great location in the Gaslamp quarter, loads of resturants and bars on the doorstep, close to transport to everywhere else youd want to go.

Hostel itself is small which is brilliant as everyone talks to each other in the social room and its mushc easier to make friends than in a big hostel. My room was 4 beds, and wasnt very big with no window. Saw some of the other rooms tho which were bigger and had windows so I was just unlucky (and think it was because it was a female only room, not mixed). Shared bathrooms are clean and totally fine. 3 sinks on either side and one side of room has 3 toilets, which are enclosed, not just stalls which is a bit more private, and other side has three self enclosed showers with a bit of space for your toiletries and clothes in the shower room too.

Kitchen is quite small but adeqate and there is also internet and laundry facilities.

Staff were brilliant and felt like part of the group, espcially on the organised days out/pub crawls etc.

Would really recommend this hostel, especially for travellers on thieir own as there is always something going on and its easy to make friends.

You get what you pay for so im not complaining, the hostel was in a great lcoation for bars, shops, nightlife, pretty much everything San Diego has to offer i'd guess. We only spent two nights here so cant say a lot. We had a four bed room for four of us so no sharing with other travellers, we shared bathrooms which were clean and easy to use (i.e. no queues ever) separate cubicles so no grossness! room was clean but very cramped, no air con, just a fan, no natural light, we had one wiondow which opened into a shaft but strangely enough there was air con in the shaft, the window chain was broken but we managed to keep it open to let some more air in as the rooms were stuffy especially being so small! lockers in room which is handy if your sharing with other travellers, rooms cleaned everyday which is great. free breakfast of pancakes which you make yourself, sometimes gets a little busy but pancakes and syrup gets you on your way so better than nothing! free wireless for laptops.

I stayed in one of the mixed 4 bed dorms at this hostel for 3 nights. My dorm was pretty small in comparison to some of the others, and absolutely boiling (it was August in San Diego, but it was a joke!)! The hostel has great amenities - free pancake breakfast every morning, free coffee and tea all day, free shampoo and shower gel and loads of fun activities to help you to meet other travellers and have a good time! The hostel is great for socialising and nightlife. We met many people from all over the world during out 3 night stay and had a brilliant time. The hostel is in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, on 5th Avenue, where all the best restaurants and bars are located. We had no trouble with noise at night. The restrooms on our floor were very clean, and I never had to queue to use the shower during my stay. I would recommend USA hostels to anyone wanting to see San Diego on a budget and would definitely stay here again!

Aryt..now looking at the reviews..and stuff...i thought this hotel would be much better than Heritage Inn...

I thought to myself..living with other people..should be pretty fun. Plus its near the party place!!!

Boy was i wrong.

Now if you are a party animal..and dont expect to sleep that early ANYWAY>...go ahead ull love it! because its truly at the heart of the gaslamp quarter. The staff...is VERY friendly too!

However....its VERYYYYYY noisy..!!!!! heart of the party place people..i had the hardest time sleeping..it could get loud till 4am!

Another thing was...i thought to myself..okay sleeping with other people should be no problem...but to be honest..it actually was.

Its really different if you have privacy.

The internet in that place is CRAP!!!!!! 5$(as i recall) for 20 min. but its SUPERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

slow. I mean..im from the philippines..and man...the internet here makes the internet in that hotel seem like its on dial up.

So all in all:

Cleanliness..was just okay. The bathrrom smelled like PI SS all the time though..even the shower. Although it does seem clean enough.

Staff was VERY friendly!

Area is perfect for party people..but not so good for people who want to relax. im telling you it could get loud at night with drunk people

Location is great again for party people..Gaslamp quarter was a blast!

Very affordable.

Crap internet!

Hostels are often associated with noise and our chain is known for late night activities, but i agree that noise at 4 am is a bit much. I believe we've changed graveyard reception since your stay so the noise issue should be better. We are aware of the internet problems, mostly caused by old AT&T lines they refuse to upgrade. We are working on it.

This will ruin your trip if you are a seriouse traveler. It is for frat parties and discos.
The music is so loud you can not even carry on a conversation with the receptionist.
I asked the "supervisor" Chris if he could adjust the volume because I have a health condition. He refused the request. They should be stopped from doing this sort of deceptive business, by the city or the BBB.

I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience, but we don't understand what was deceptive...our hostels are known for having late night parties and we do play music all day. Now if it was so loud you couldn't sleep then i agree it is an issue for us to address.

My boyfriend and I were expecting good things from this hostel after spending the previous week at USA Hostels Hollywood (great hostel) unfortunately the name was the only thing they had in common. When we arrived (very tired after an 8 hour bus journey) we were told we had to wait to check in despite the fact it was the middle of the day. We waited almost an hour before anyone sorted us out. The staff seemed very inexperienced and weren't particularly friendly or helpful.

Our room was tiny and instead of some sort of storage (which would have been useful as we had 2 suitcases) it was full of useless furniture such as an armchair and a coffe table! The bathrooms are all shared and whilst i was apprehensive about this at first it turned out to be ok. Usually a bit of wait for a shower in the morning so if you're in a rush get up early.

Like it's Hollywood counterpart all you can make pancakes are provided for breakfast however there was never enough pancake mix no matter how early we got the kitchen and we ended up getting our own breafast.

The hostel's greatest asset is it's location. Right in the middle of the Gaslamp quarter it's surrounded by restaurants, bars and clubs. It's also only a short walk to the San Diego Padres baseball ground, would highly reccomend heading to a game. There is also a shopping mall and grocery store just around the corner from the hostel and you get a discount there if you're staying at the hostel. You can buy discount tickets for some of San Diego's attractions at the hostel such as it's famous zoo (another great day out). I would stay at this hostel again based on it's fantastic location but don't expect the warmest of welcomes!
