This was a great hostel, with very friendly traveller folk staff.
The boyfriend and I booked the cheapest dorm room possible which was right next to the party room, we are both heavy sleepers but if your not I would pay the extra. We also had some interesting roommates (I forgot most people who book cheap rooms ARE on a budget and wont participate in anything to save costs).
Was a bit disappointed there was no milk for my coffee or for oatmeal, and some loos were getting fixed which meant the bathroom was a bit crowded, but otherwise had a great vibe, and I would definately stay there again.
If you are a bit of a lone wolf or like early nights, you are probably better off in a hotel though

I previously stayed in the USA Hostels in both San Fran and LA before booking into San Diego. I was very impressed with the former so this lead to my choice of accommodation in the USA in San Diego. However, in the week that I stayed there I really dont know how it has such a great rep of a hostel.

BAD POINTS: The place is full of staff. Its al very needless as they dont do much at all except crowd the kitchen when you need to cook or hang around the stairs making it impossible to pass by. They could do with shedding at least 5/6 workers..there is seriously more staff than actual guests there!!
The toilets are constantly closed for service at key times during the day, i.e. around mid-morning/afternoon and close to the time you would be getting ready to go out. Makes no sense whatsoever.
The place is very cramped and tight to get around. The laundry room only had 2 working machines and if you are anyway not on the slim side, good luck getting in and out of the place!
The front of the hostel is rather noisy. If you stay in any of them rooms your sleep is going to be patchy at best on a sober night.

GOOD POINTS: The place can be a good party spot. They bring you on decent trips out. The pub crawl is a must tbh. Just wished the staff acted more for the guests than themselves. The lounge room is a must for cheap beers and a good party after coming home from a night out.
The kitchen is fully equipped with everything that you need and the hostel does throw on cheap dinners during the week for $5 which is pretty decent.

Room Tip: Get a room in the back or upstairs

Thank you for your candid comments about our property. It's through guest observations that we can continue to improve our service to guests. Please let me address your concerns. We absolutely agree that the laundry area is a tight fit and we have a plan in the works to enlarge the laundry this winter when the season slows down. We have 10 staff for 100 guest beds and in the summers we certainly do need them all! That's how we're able to keep the place clean and the tours you enjoyed running smoothly and regularly. We often get comments on how friendly the staff are, so we're sorry that you did not have that experience. As for the bath cleaning, they are regularly cleaned twice a day and are supposed to be timed to be after the morning rush and before the evening rush, but we will check on that scheduling to make sure it's not interfering with guests' needs. You may have seen staff in the kitchen prepping for the meals that we serve a couple of times a week. We will certainly tell them to make room for those guests who need a bit of prep space also. tWe hope you enjoyed San Diego as a whole.

we got a private room (no ensuites though) here for 2 nights for 2 female friends (in our early 30's)for $144.00 which we halved. (includes all taxes etc)
get bad things out of way first
>no ensuite available but we didnt mind too much, although bit of a shock when we were told the toilets and showers were mixed!!! actually it wasnt an issue in the end for us, showers were spacious so you could get changed in the cubicle which had locks on
> big steps up the hostel to reception, then when you have checked in more steps up to the rooms. bit of nightmare if you have a heavy suitcase, be ok if you have a rucksack though
they were the bad points but apart from that i really like the hostel. it was decorated quite funky, staff were friendly, wasnt too noisey and its right in the hub of things, near the bars and restaurants and not too far walking distance to the shopping centre. i would love to go back to san diego and stay longer.
now, at the weekends it gets packed in san diego, everywhere seems to close at 1.30am so you need to get out early, cant get a lock in and they want you out at closing times. the girls get very dressed up, heels and short skirts.
we were in room 15 which was quite big, had fridge and tv 4 lockers in the room, full length mirror, 2 fans in the room. the hostel has a party lounge open 10pm til 3am
can get cheap tickets from hostel reception to lots of places we got tickets to sea world. for $63 to get there you walk up the street to top of road of 5th ave.(bout 5mins) you will see the trolleys there (trains) we got the red line to old town then the no 9 bus which takes us straight to seaworld (trolley and bus came to $5 return)it takes no time really to get there.there are attendants there if your not sure and they are really helpful.
cheeseshop for breakfast is fab-go out of hostel turn right at 1st block thenturn left then right again, next to shout nightclub.
for night out we started at henrys bar which is $5 to get in then went onto double juice nightclub which is $20 but we got in for free (helpful if your a girl!) train from la to san diego was $36 return and was bout 2 hours, lovely journey.to get from train station to the hostel its too far to walk if your on a budget i suggest getting on the bikes like we did. man on a bike takes you (and luggage!!!) straight there. it was hilarious journey as the bike guy kept getting off to dance to his music which was blasting out of his speakers (we got some stares all right and lots of giggles from passer bys!!!) that was $15 and with tip $20. just for the laugh i suggest this-was great fun! i loved san diego, would love to head back, but remember everywhere closes early so get out early and enjoy!!!!

Room Tip: big room. no aircon

This hostel looks nice and staff is friendly. The room is very small, hardly any room for your bag. The beds are nice because of the privacy "wall", bookshelf, reading light and outlets. Lockers with 2 outlets inside it are provided free of charge.

However it is impossible to sleep in this hostel. Maybe it's not as bad if you are in a room at the back but I was in the front room and the noise from the restaurant and bars is just too much. There is live music untill about 3am at night.

Also, the bathrooms are unisex.

Room Tip: Get a room in the back.

Well to tell the truth, the place was not so good to sleep, especially for the weekend. As you know, this one is quite famous for their parties and it will be excellen if you are crazy at party. The sad thing for me is, I had one or two or whatever roommates. The girl and her boyfriend talked in French quite loudly without closing door around 3 a.m. and it was freaking annoying because the place is quite noisy so you can not get back to sleep easily again. Also she made her alarm early and she did not turn off at all cause of her hang over or whatever. So if you aren't generous to understand this kind of people, you should choose another hostel for your travel.
