Eight of us met and enjoyed Bella sandwich, Salmon BLT, Reuben, Asian chicken salad--all were pleased. their sweet onion soup was similar to French onion and very nice. We finished off sharing some apple strudel and brownie--all delicious--good place for group meals---nice ambiance. we'll return

We visited Cafe Merlot for lunch in a Saturday. We had reservations and were seated shortly. After long deliberation, I decided on the Portabella Mushroom Sandwich. It was amazing!! For a beverage, I had the mimosa which was delightful. The warm baguettes with the roasted garlic dipping sauce was divine and seeped from my pores many days after! The service was friendly and accommodating.

So we live in the area and have dined at Cafe a Merlot many times now. I keep trying to hope
for the best, but it just does not happen. This place is so cute! With it's location in such a quaint spot within a winery it screams at you to stop by and enjoy. The outdoor patio is done
nicely and is close to the wine tasting room, which gives you a chance to hear some nice
live music in the afternoons, plus enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Unfortunately, the problems here are many. The food is average at best. The menu has many options, simple enough with descriptions that make everything sound great, but then it falls short. They offer specials but then you are told that they have run out. The service is hit or miss, but most times very, very slow. You start with one waiter and end up with another or you flag down anyone just begging to place your order. The staff seems to try hard, but they just can't get it done. On our last visit we waited forever to order (at least 20 min), then forever for food (another 20 min). When
the meal finally came I was given something completely different than what I ordered! By that point I just ate it anyway. I am not sure if this is just bad management or our bad luck but probably the former since we keep trying over and over again. Such a shame
that these folks can't step it up a notch since this is a great spot on a warm day for Sunday brunch, or taking in a meal after wine tasting, bringing out of town guests. So much
potential here... My average rating is being kind, since the atmosphere and location is so
pleasant. Maybe try this place on a quiet week day for a dessert and coffee??? Bring low expectations, maybe you will get lucky...

I enjoyed a scrumptious lunch today on the lovely and inviting patio of Café Merlot, located on the grounds of the Bernardo Winery in Rancho Bernardo in North County, San Diego.. My portobello and grilled peach burger was a very creative vegetarian take on a hamburger and delicious and refreshing on a summer's day. The ingredients of my "burger" and side salad were very fresh and of the highest quality. Our dessert indulgence was equally wonderful. The service was lovely and our server was very gracious. This is going to be my new "go to" restaurant. We are fortunate to have this excellent kitchen in North County. It is a great destination spot as one can combine a fine meal with browsing the interesting shops and experiencing a wine tasting on the historic property.

They have an annual Spring Crafts Fair every Mother's Day weekend and I took my daughter to celebrate her birthday. She's a talented craft person and has been a vendor in several other craft fairs and wanted to consider this one. She thought that this one had superior craftsmanship to those she had entered.

It's a bit pricey but I had a coupon for lunch that I bought from Travel Zoo. It was a hot day so we ate inside where it was a little cooler. The food and service were exceptional but the noise level was very loud. There were a few toddlers that expressed themselves in a loud voice without parental intervention. It was not possible to have a conversation. I have an extremely bad back and the chair I had was very uncomfortable. Charming antique setting but no restrooms on site. There's a public one a few doors up that is clean.

I would like to go back on a regular day when there are not so many people and we can view the winery shops. By the way, the Bloody Mary was very good too.
