We have eaten here twice before when visiting San Diego and decided to do so again as we loved the food and service on previous visits. This time was a little bit of a let down. We did not have a reservation but when asking for availability of a table for two, we got conflicting information. We were just about to walk away when a more senior staff member offered us a table outside which we took.
The waiter asked for our drink order and we asked for a bottle of wine. Not knowing the local wines, he gave us a glass and asked if it was okay and we said it was. Later, when asked by another staff member if we would like another drink, we said that we had a bottle and they went to fetch this. Upon returning to the table he mentioned that there was no bottle. We were not too happy about this as the wine was much more expensive by the glass than the bottle. After some discussion with the staff, they agreed to only charge us the bottle price for the wine.
The meals were mixed up and my husband received my medium steak and I received his rare steak.
As it had been my birthday, they did present me with a Creme Brûlée which is my favourite dessert. This was a nice touch but the other glitches in the service and the food for the night did take the shine off the evening.

Donovan's was across the street in the Gaslamp District from our hotel. The selection was your standard steakhouse fare, nothing remarkable. If you want a good, expensive cut of meat in a dark boring atmosphere, try it out. The service was friendly and good. The cuts of meet we're expensive-but tasty. The wine list offered a good selection.

We were in San Diego for a Congress and we noticed the restaurant while visiting the Gaslamp quarter. It was so crowded that we wondered what drew so much attention. Unfortunately they could not give us a table since there was a private party (it was happy hour). But they refused us so kindly that we decided to try our chance once more. Meanwhile they offered to give a very nice table if we come later for dinner. And that's what we did. We felt so lucky to find this place by chance. It is so close to the convention that we went twice for dinner; once for seafood, the other for steak, both were very delicious. The seabass is highly recommended. The hostess was very pleasant and greeted with great pleasure at both times. They recognised us at the second time and gave even a better table. The waitress was awesome, the food was very fresh, tasty and the wine was extraordinary. We had several lunch and dinner around Gaslamp area; all disappointing including Hard Rock cafe and Old Spagetti House (where you think there is a standart for food) so we very really shocked to have such a good food with such a nice and kind service. It is not cheap but definitely worth it. The best part is you can also have special drinks and delicous free appetizers the happy hour drink specials great, but the free appetizers were delicious and hearty! Happy hour is definitely recommended.
