“A fun ride on the beach”

Happy Trails - Private Rides
Reviewed June 21, 2012

My wife and daughter signed up for a horse ride on the beach. This is something they both had really wanted to do for some time. They signed up for a private ride for two hours. Both are experienced riders so they did not need any explanation or education on riding. The horses were great, the guide was experienced and had a lot of good local information. The guide also proactively offered to take pictures. The ride consisted of a trail path to the beach and then a ride along the water. One item to note. The location is very close to the border and they saw a number of patrol folks and agents. At no time did they feel concerned, however.

Overall a great experience that they would both do again.

loved the scenic and romantic horseback ride on the sunset on the beach, hated the constant text message writing unfriendly guide, did not know the mexican borderline police patrol were in the area constantly on look out. the guide's horse started to lash out and refused to return back to starting point until it was whipped a couple of times, making all of us very nervous, Definitely not an easy trail and would not recommend to a novice at horseback riding.

This was one of the best parts of my trip. Our guide was great and the ride was phenomenal. I would do this again in a heartbeat. The ride to the beach is about 45 minutes and then time on the beach was delightful. It is not a beach with a lot of people as you have to walk a few miles to get to the beach. There was only 1 other person on the beach when we were there.

Happy Trails advertises this as a "beach ride". We spent 2 hours, 15 minutes walking through dry dusty scrub brush and 15 minutes on the beach. This ride was supposed to take 2 hours but lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes because we went so slowly. It was very dull and boring. The photos on the Happy Trails website show riders trotting through the water but our guide was not interested in taking the horses in the water. When we asked to take to horses into the water, the guide did not really respond. Finally, she said we could if we wanted to. However, she would not take her horse anywhere near the water and since the horses are trained to go nose to nose, our horses would not go in the water either. We called ahead of time to ask if we could trot and go into the water and were told yes on both counts. However, when we questioned the guide she said they do not allow you to trot due to liability. They only take cash or check and the money is paid up front so you have very little recourse. I would not recommend this attraction when there are so many more intersting things to do in San Diego.

This is a unique activity in San Diego -- the opportunity to go horseback riding on the beach. The stable is not, however, in La Jolla. It's south of downtown San Diego at
2180 Monument Road, San Diego, California. The horses appeared well cared for. We clearly had a different guide than the one mentioned in Zubora's review. Our guide was friendly, informative, and concerned with safety. After mounting our horses and getting oriented, we rode from the stable across varied (but pretty flat) terrain along the Mexican border, then headed north along the beach. The scenery was beautiful, and our guide pointed out notable plants and other features. Some horses like to venture into the shallow water; others are reluctant to do so. This ride was a highlight of our visit to San Diego, and I recommend it highly.
