Good beach but mainly men nude. About 20 percent females nude, but many females in swimsuits. About... read more
Be prepared to hike! It is a long ways down from where you park at the Gliderport. There are also no handrails so be careful! Once you get down there, you’ll just pick a spot and post up. Most of the females were in bikinis while most of the males were nude. If it’s your first time at a nude beach, it might take some getting used to but honestly, no one is really staring at you - most everyone is there to do their own thing and are pretty respectful to not stare at you. I did find it strange that there were a couple families there with young children - I definitely would not take them there but that’s just me!
A wonderful beach. My last time at a nude beach was almost 40 years ago. I enjoyed it then. Black's Beach was better. I was a little intimidated about getting there after reading the reviews. The hike down from the gliderport sounded hard. And for the record, I'm in my late 50s and I don't exercise much. I considered walking down the beach from the north, but it's a pretty long walk. So I did the hike from the gliderport. While the description in the reviews are accurate, it wasn't as bad as I expected. Just take your time. Going down was more about paying attention and keeping your footing. Going up was exhausting and my legs ached the next day.
As for the beach, it was wonderful. Hard packed sand, easy to walk on, lots of space. The water was chilly but not too cold to play in. It's also fun watching the hang gliders fly. And of course, the freedom of enjoying the sun and water nude is amazing. Not sure how I'll go back to typical beaches. :)
There is lots of parking at the gliderport. I got there at 11AM on a Tuesday and there were a lot of cars there already. So I had to park north of the gliderport. The entrance to the trail to the beach is at the south end of the parking lot. And there is a port-o-let near the gliderport. Good idea to take advantage of that before the hike down.
Getting there is a bit of a challenge, but if your comfortable walking up long flights of stairs, without a handrail, I say go for it. The trail to the beach is more rugged than Wreck Beach in Vancouver, but it seems a lot shorter, and less strenuous.
Arriving at the glider port, the trailhead is immediately to your left.
Beach is very long, fine, hardpacked sand, we were wondering where the nude beach section started, that question was answered right at the beach at the bottom of the trail. There were a number of people walking around nude, so I guess it starts right there! There were tons of people with bathing suits on as well, so don't feel pressured to doff your duds right away. It really just has a great casual feel to it. Plenty of space to find a spot to hang out and set up your umbrella and towel.
The water seemed a little cool, but the ocean is nice and shallow, you can walk out a long ways and still only be waist deep.
Great beach, well worth the small hike.
No facilities at the beach however, no trash cans, outhouses, or vendors, so make sure you are self contained!
Use the road to get down to the beach. The trails are dangerous. Long beach with high cliffs, beautiful place for a walk, play in the surf, sitting in the sun. Short section of nude beach. Comfortable with or with out your suit.
Don't try the hike if you are not in good shape.
An unusual beach because it is a challenge getting to it from the cliffs. Because it is hard to get to, I suppose that is why some beachgoers like to go au natural. You must be determined to make it to the beach. But it is a very scenic and of course secluded beach compared to others. The cliffs are fabulous and the scenery matches. Most people look down from the cliffs as going down to the beach is time consuming and can be treacherous.
The place itself is less congested and very natural in contrast to the rest of the Hyped beaches of the SoCAL.
A place to enjoy the nature in its true essence.
