It is long hike down the steps from the glider port if that is the way you choose to go. Careful a it is a little sketchy if your balance is not good. Once you get to the bottom everything to your right i clothing optional to your left the clothed area starts in about 100 yards. Spread out. Take off your clothe and enjoy the sun. Totally different than Haulover in Miami. There are no services here at all. Pack it in/Pack it out.
The beach and cliffs were beautiful. You could watch the hang gliders. There are nudist there, me being one of them. But everyone respects each other right to be nude or clothed. The water was very cold too me, lifeguards were patrolling the beach. The climb down wasn't too bad, at least the trail i got, the other one i would't try.
I was in San Diego with friends and wanted to see the beach. We went to Blacks beach and found upon arriving it was also a legal nude beach. We stripped and spent the day with about 100 naked people in and out the water. Hard to get to with the trail but worth the walk down if your into spontaneity. Not for the shy nor timed.
I had heard about Black's Beach since the early 80's from an old classmate. So when the opportunity to attend a wedding at Torrey Pines came up, I added the beach to my bucket list. In fact, coincidentally, my wife and I were fortunate to enjoy the nude beach at Miacomet on Nantucket last Sunday and then enjoy Black's Beach the following Sunday. Kind of cool enjoying the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in one week!
As a point of reference, we generally enjoy Miacomet and Haulover nude beaches every year. Both are quite different with Miacomet more remote and Haulover incredibly busy. But Black's is an awesome combination of both. Very difficult to actually get to, it is rather remote by default. However, it's location to the UCSD campus, and unbelievably predictable sunny weather assures that it gets a healthy crowd most days.
Access to the beach is well described in the beach website. The fastest route to the beach is down the steep trail that has been built. Most of it is covered with primitive steps that are pretty easily negotiable. Going down takes less than ten minutes and the trail puts you right at the beach. Coming back up takes 25 minutes of strenuous stair climbing. Throw in the fact that a couple areas have cliffs on the side of the trail, the number of visitors going up and down, and the relentless sun of Southern California, and it can definitely be a challenge (but worth it). The other less dangerous route is to take Uber to the beach access road off Black Gold Rd. and walk down the steep, paved road. Many students take this route as it is right across the street from campus. The walk down to the beach takes about ten minutes for healthy people. Since my wife was recovering from ACL surgery we took this route. It wasn't the greatest choice because although the road is paved, it is REALLY steep. Plus, once you get to the beach you have a good half-mile walk to the right just to get to the southern-most edge of the mile long beach. So next time we both agreed that we would take the trail and take our time. in fact, instead of wasting an hour walking back down the beach to the access road and back up the long winding road, we took the stairs.
The beach itself is huge and spectacularly beautiful. It can be quite crowded on the weekend, but it is so huge that you don't feel like a sardine like a busy day at Haulover. The shoreline is flat and firm so walking is very easy. In addition, the water is clear, the bottom sandy, and the waves very easy to manage.
Black's Beach lived up to all of our expectations. Predictable sunny, warm weather makes this location ideal. We will definitely visit again. We loved it!
If you're not bothered by a few nude sun bathers (this is a nude beach), definitely recommend. The problem is the hike to the beach. It's pretty steep, and definitely not ideal in a pair of flip flops. Had a great time though.
Lay on the beach , look up and see beautiful hand gliders of every color of the rainbow from the cliffs behind you ; look behind you and see the majestic rugged cliffs ; look out to the sea and see endless views of water and sky ; and , yup , look around you and see people of ALL shapes , sizes and sexes enjoying the warm California sun in their birthday suits. Just a cornucopia of visual delight! (If you don't like nude people , don't go here. Duh. And what's with the reviews stating "fat old men"? So if they were young hot skinny men those reviewers would have no complaints?? Hmmm....) (I do agree there should be better signage about the nudity though. Good point. )
Basically , if you are there to sit on the beach nude and enjoy your friends company or just lay and enjoy the sights and sounds of the beach , this place is awesome! If however you are there to critic the physical shape of the people there who enjoy being au naturel , regardless and in spite of , their physique then stay away. We don't need your kind here. And trust me , nobody is oogiling YOU. Haha! Get over yourself.
