“How can everything be so good ?”
Reviewed January 26, 2013 via mobile

First time the 3 of us tried this little Italy resturant . Yes, we're a bit fussy, BUT , how did this place get everything SO right for our lunch ? Started with a " we have a dog , could we get the patio set for us?" Service people we're more than happy to set up outside on a slightly overcast lunch. Dog got water without even asking. We have sat outside at many places and sometimes you can get forgotten . Not the case. Maybe it was my lovely wife or the beautiful Sheltie we have....... But whatever !
Lasagne superb!!! Calamari also !!! Cioppinio out of this world !!! Again , I cannot say enough about the excellent service, they seemed to actually care!!
Would travel here again to enjoy, no question !
Note to owner/ manager: keep the staff on Saturday 26th, jan. They ,along with the food, will bring us back.

“My FAV restaurant in San Diego”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

Restaurant design has a cool feel, Food and service are great. Rasonably pirced. Pastas and sauces are made fresh in house daily. The stuffed zucchini blossom appetizer and creamy zucchini soups are also nice compliments to the entree. Wine list is also very good and reasonably priced. Strongly recommend

“Great Italian Comfort Food”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

A Italian restaurant that would fit in well in New York or San Francisco. We went for New Year's Eve dinner on a vacation with the kids. Everything was very fresh and perfectly seasoned. We especially enjoyed the squid ink tagliatelli with seafood in red sauce, which was not overwhelmingly "inky" as at many other restaurants we've visited. Desserts were great as well. Definitely worth a return visit.

Nice authentic local Italian. Owner and chef are Italian and will not dissapoint. I've eaten here a few times over the years and it's always been fantastic. Decent wine list, great deserts.

“Best Italian in the City”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

This seems to be THE Italian restaurant to go to while in San Diego. My husband and I were told numerous times that Bencotto was the #1 Italian restaurant in the city. With so many recommendations, we decided to have dinner at this Little Italy locale. Since all of the locals were raving about it, we decided a reservation should be made. It was a good thing we did as there were not many tables available for that night. When we got to the front entrance, we saw numerous people being turned away. Because of the layout of the restaurant, one has to wait for their table outside. We were glad that there was a gas heat lamp at the entrance to make things a bit warmer.
When you enter the restaurant, you quickly notice the modern and contemporary layout. The restaurant has two levels, with the upper portion having a balcony overlooking the floor below. We were seated at table that gave us a great view below and outside as there is plenty of glass on three sides of Bencotto. It was nice to see part of Little Italy lit up at night while having our dinner.
Once seated, we were given some fresh bread with olive oil and parmesan cheese. We decided to share an appetizer: Tortino di Cavolfiore. It is a cauliflower soufflé served with casera cheese sauce. This appetizer was divine. For our entrees, my husband chose their Gnocchi (handmade potato dumplings) with the Ai Formaggi creamy cheese sauce. I had my heart set on their Ravioli di Magro (egg and semolina flour pasta, filled with spinach, ricotta cheese, parmesan cheese) with a Bolognese traditional meat tomato sauce. Our entrees were of a typical American size: huge. We concluded that we could have split one entrée and have been satisfied. Nonetheless, we finished off our delicious entrees – and were glad that we had to walk back to our hotel to work off some of those calories.
I will be back in San Diego this year for meetings, and I definitely plan to take my associates to 750 West Fir Street for some molto buona cucina Italiana.
