Review of Huapango's

Huapango's
Ranked #1,225 of 4,960 Restaurants in San Diego
Cuisines: Mexican
Description: Here's my review: The good news is it's on a busy street corner. The bad news is, well, you get the idea. There's not much to be done about the bus stop out front or the weed-surrounded dilapidated tractor next door, but faster and more attentive service would help to distract customers. The beer menu is lengthy and several are offered in pint drafts, more would be better. Chips and salsa are complimentary but the cheesy one is oddly reminiscent of velveeta and picante sauce. Entrees were colorful and flavorful and food is generally good. The biggest challenge for Huapango's is the street corner location and the best remedy would seem to be service that is louder and faster than the street.

I was with friends and a nine year old boy when we stumbled upon Huapango's. Chips and 2 kinds of dips arrived quickly as well as great drinks. Great service and kid friendly. Looks rustic inside and adds to the dining experience. Good portions and glad we went. So full we didn't have dessert.

What a great place this is with the best Mexican food I have had. Fish & Shrimp tacos with rice & beans were a stand out.Very tasty & not heavy. Nice to have corn chips & 2 dips given while waiting for my meal. Love the architecture exterior & interior.

Interesting flavored Mexican food. Starters were good, but the main dishes were definitely not traditionally flavored or appetizing. Over priced for what you got.

We were a party of 3 going for brunch. The restaurant was not busy but it took the waiter at least 20 minutes to come to take our order. Food took almost 30 minutes to arrive and was lukewarm, meaning it had been sitting for quite a while. No syrup was offered for the pancakes or French toast. No condiments of any sort were offered. Two of the party had the Hacienda Breakfast which promised much, including a complimentary glass of champagne but delivered little (including no champagne). The 3rd ordered from the a la carte menu and had a Mexican burger which looked disgusting and what it lacked in quality more than made up for in quantity. It is disappointing to have to leave a tip in such circumstances, but the minimum 15% it was. This was not the way to start the day; maybe it gets better as the day goes on.

On our way to the San Diego Zoo, we decided to look for somewhere to eat. We happened upon this place and they claimed to be the "Best Mexican Food", so, what the heck, let's try it! We were the first ones in (they opened at 11:00am) and we were seated promptly. We had a little trouble with my wife's order - it seems that stating "fajita chicken, plain, no vegetables" doesn't stop them from putting a sauce over her burrito and onions on top. It looked beautiful, but she just couldn't eat it. She asked to send it back and just get a bean and cheese burrito, plain, with just beans and cheese, but again those pesky onions found their way on top. She decided to attempt it by prying open the burrito top and eating the inside, but by then her appetite was gone and we just decided to take it home so I could eat it later. The manager came and asked if everything was OK, and we explained what happened, and he insisted that we wait for him to at least make her some cheese quesadillas. He did, and he was so nice and helpful, and even gave us very good directions to the Zoo!
