A bit of history about the key involvement of some members of this religion who put their lives on the line, assisting in the Mexican war, and contributing to the move west, including the settlements in San Diego (like the court house). The interactive program is fun for all ages; while the missionaries do not "push" the religion itself. More information is available at request. At the end, a fabulous free photo is offered, and kids love "panning" for gold. Something fun, fabulous, and different in Old Town.

I'm a big fan of historic sites and enjoyed Old Town San Diego area very much, with the exception of the Mormon Battalion. This is a modern building with a lengthy (35 minutes+) "guided tour" which is actually a video-based telling of the Mormon westward migration. I am personally religious (but not Mormon) and enjoy visiting historic religious sites of many religious, but this was was quite overt without any historic content or structure… unless you think visiting Cinderella's Castle in Disneyland is the same as visiting the Palace of Versailles. I have older and more historically relevant "artifacts" displayed in my home than were on display in single room at the end of the tour with actual historical content (with the exception of the cannon… I don't have a cannon). That being said, I would take kids 12 and under provided they are interested in history and have a long attention span… unfortunately none meeting those qualifications come to mind.

Yes this is a Church sponsored facility, but I don't know where else you get a free interactive California History lesson. One has to pay to get into the California Missions and they are also affiliated with a religious group. Trip Advisor reviews led us to the facility and this was one of the highlights of our visit to San Diego.

We had two teenage girls, who get bored easily. We decided to watch the film first as it had just started. It was about the Gold Country. It was well done, just long enough to be informative, and well worth the 20 minutes or so. We then proceeded to the tour, where one is told the background about the building and then you are quickly involved in the story that unfolds about the Pioneers. As the story progresses one moves from room to room. Our family has been to all 50 states and we have not seen any historical sites with visuals similar to this. The only thing that comes to mind is one of the activities at Disneyland, or Disney World.

Don't miss the photo op, again free, or the panning for gold!

This has gone through a major overhaul! It has gold mining, teaches about the history of theater in a fun way, has some fun surprises, and is free. Allthosethings are hardto find in one place in San Diego. We took 6boys ages 6 to 12 and they all enjoyed it and listed it second to boogie boarding, as the favorite thing on the trip.
