“A great visit to San Diego's past”

The Mormon Battalion Historic Site was updated about a year ago and is so enjoyable and interactive. There is a wonderful tour with interactive video and wonderful history and that is followed by an area to pan for gold, have a photo taken of your group, artifacts and much more. And it is ALL free. Plus the parking lot is free and plentiful (hard to find in Old Town) and the cleanest bathrooms anywhere. It is open every day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“Nice museum!”

We stopped into the Mormon Battalion and were a little anxious when "Sister Angela" met us to give us a tour. At first I was afraid it would be preachy, but the presentation was top notch!

Interactive video, professionally done, engaging and interesting, and not preachy at all. And it was free!

I highly recommend it. You get your picture taken at the end, and they give you a card to return if you're interested in learning more about them - no pressure.

Highly recommended!

“A Gem of a find”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 11, 2012

We took a wrong turn and wound up high on a cliff looking down at the city of San Diego. We saw a sign that said Mormon Battalion Historic Site so we went to look and learned some history we had never heard before. This site was about the first Americans who came to San Diego which was a group of Mormons who got enlisted by the Army to blaze a trail to the west coast. The story is fantastic about their struggles they had from Iowa, a 2000 mile journey with no established roads, stores or conveniences.

Getting lost seems to be a habit of ours as we were looking for Old Town San Diego and got turned around as we went down the high hill from the memorial. We finally got headed right and stumbled upon the Mormon Church new exhibit on Juan street. There is a chuck wagon in front of a brand new adobe building. It was early in the morning and they were open and FREE so we decided to go in.

I cannot tell you how delighted we were with the presentation of the story. The ladies were dressed as pioneers, and they led you from room to room where a continuing movie of the saga interacted with the guests. My husband served as a model when they showed the visitors what a soldier of the 1840 era was outfitted with--from flintlock, to hat. We took pictures and I will have to add them later.

The program was EXCELLENT--not to be missed and so much of the history of San Diego's early years are given there. Young children can pan for gold out back. They have an observation deck to overlook the Old Town...and did I mention it was free?

It is located right next to Heritage Park and the parking across the street is free too. Great shops and low cost in the Old Town section. Old Town itself is set up nicely with free exhibits and reproduction buildings (some original) of a historic nature. Go there!

“We are now honorary Mormons”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 5, 2012

It was free, in Old Town where we had dinner and open until 9:00 pm. Although new the building is done in period style and the docents are in period costume. The history of how the Mormons came to fight in the Mexican American War is told through video.

The high tech story told about the mormon battalion makes you feel like you were really there. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed.
