“First Friday Magic”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2012

We had dinner here on the first Friday of the month, after visiting many of the open galleries in Liberty Station, and enjoying music, snacks and wine. The visit to Solare topped off a very exciting evening, with good Italian food, excellent service, a table visit from the chef with bruschetta to enjoy, and a magician that entertained us. The MagicManShow@gmail.com....Derek...was sensational, and entertained diners courtesy of the restaurant. Solare does something unique by making dining FUN!!! ....as well as offering ambiance and good food.

“Intimate Italian Restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2012

Italian Restaurant with excellent staff. The food was OUTSTANDING, the Filet with the Dark Chocolate sauce was INCREDIBLE. The Bruchette, was really good along with the Prosciutto wrapped Mellon that was MEMORABLE. We also had the Tour of Italian Wine, sampler. Overall an excellent place, especially on the off hours, where it is quiet with an intimate atmosphere.

“A very happy hour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2012

Went to this restaurant for happy hour and were were glad we did. The location is very nice and quiet. We sat outside on the patio - very relaxing. The service is a tad slow but picked up toward the end. In their defense, they were pretty busy. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food for the price. We had eggplant bruschetta - tasty, calamari and veggie frittura - very nice and light, pear and gorgonzola pizza - could have used maybe a bit more flavor, but overall yummy, and absolutely delicious mussels in broth. I would come back just to eat those - mmmmm. The cocktails of the week were interesting: on the savory side but good and had much more than just a drop of liqueur ( sometimes typical at some not-so-happy hours). I think the first one was called "The ultimate basil martini" and the other "The crushed orange martini". I liked the orange one better. My husband had red house Chianti and said that it was pretty good. The place is definitely worth a visit, we are definitely planning to come back sometime soon.

“Nice setting with enthusiastic staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2012

This is a few blocks away from the cluster of restaurants in Liberty Station. It is a beautifully decorated renovation of an old building. Charming wait staff, food presented well. Food quality ranges from average to very good. . Overall nice experience

“A real mixed bag”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2012

I went to Solare after it was recommended to me but the concierge at the hotel was staying in. First of all, the positives - the decor of the restaurant is great, and the bread was particularly delicious. The first waiter we had was great, and recommended lots for us to do in San Diego.

The negatives - the food is good but not great, meaning that I personally thought it was overpriced. The dessert my husband had was a real low point - dry and bland. The main problem however, was our second waiter. When he gave us our bill, he asked us if we knew about tips in the US. Thinking he was about to make a joke of some kind, my husband invited him to tell us. He then proceeded to bring out a huge pile of receipts, moaning about how "tourists" don't understand how tipping works and showing us good and bad examples of tipping (i.e. big tips vs. small tips)! Whilst we were digesting this bizarre behaviour, he came back to our table with a credit card and paid receipt on a tray - neither of which were ours! It's a good job we're honest people and didn't just take the credit card and run! Needless to say he made the evening end on a real low point, and I had to fight the urge to explain to him why some "tourists" might not be tipping him so generously........

In summary - decent food but nothing special, and the abilities of the staff are "varied" for want of a better word. I wouldn't hurry back.
