“A real mixed bag”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2012

I went to Solare after it was recommended to me but the concierge at the hotel was staying in. First of all, the positives - the decor of the restaurant is great, and the bread was particularly delicious. The first waiter we had was great, and recommended lots for us to do in San Diego.

The negatives - the food is good but not great, meaning that I personally thought it was overpriced. The dessert my husband had was a real low point - dry and bland. The main problem however, was our second waiter. When he gave us our bill, he asked us if we knew about tips in the US. Thinking he was about to make a joke of some kind, my husband invited him to tell us. He then proceeded to bring out a huge pile of receipts, moaning about how "tourists" don't understand how tipping works and showing us good and bad examples of tipping (i.e. big tips vs. small tips)! Whilst we were digesting this bizarre behaviour, he came back to our table with a credit card and paid receipt on a tray - neither of which were ours! It's a good job we're honest people and didn't just take the credit card and run! Needless to say he made the evening end on a real low point, and I had to fight the urge to explain to him why some "tourists" might not be tipping him so generously........

In summary - decent food but nothing special, and the abilities of the staff are "varied" for want of a better word. I wouldn't hurry back.

“sumptious to the last dessert”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2012

The 39 members of our family reunion voted yes with their clean plates to the buffet appetizers, main courses and delectable deserts.
Favorites were polpette solare and pizza margherita among the appetizers, spinish and ricotta cheese raviola and chicken picca for main curses, and both deserts: salame al cioccolato and tiramisu.
It was a coupe for Solare being able to so fully satisfy family members ranging in age from 3 to 75.
Compliments to Roberta and Marie for taking such good care of us.

“Not a good experience”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2012

We went in on a Tuesday night and the restaurant was almost empty. The wine was 1/2 price for bottles less than $80.00 so we picked a nice Nobile de Montepulciano, that turned out to be the highlight of the meal. The Ceasar salad had way too many croutons and not great flavor. My seafood pasta was bad, the pasta was undercooked and hard. The shrimp, scallops and fish were minimal. Hopefully this was just an off night.

Tasty menu with great service. I was able to eat with my dog in the side patio area which is a great place to relax. Thank you Sean for being a great waiter. I will visit again when back in the area.
