Visiting in San Diego for a weekend, and after reading reviews decided to try Cafe Bleu for Sunday dinner. It was amazing. $17.50 for a 3 course prix fix menu with awesome selections!! Everything we had was perfectly prepared, tasted phenomenal, and service was outstanding too. We literally couldn't have made a better decision.

“A French Gem”
Reviewed July 17, 2014

I read in past yelp reviews "Cafe Bleu is a Hidden Gem" in this neighborhood, well I totally agree. Classic French cuisine at a very reasonable price, along with the owner who treats his customers like gold, what more can you ask for. We were a family of 4, made our dinner reservation on Open Table, right when we walked in, our cozy table was waiting.

We had the European wine flights and beer flights that were excellent. The dishes we had were - Brie En Croute: (brie cheese wrapped in a light pastry shell and baked to a golden brown; red wine reduction, dried fruit salpicon), - Steak Tartare: (knife-cut all-natural filet mignon, fines herbes, shallots, soy & lime juice; crostinis, balsamic reduction, chili oil), - Salade Nicoise: (ahi tuna seared rare, mixed baby greens, haricot vert, picholine olives, roasted tomato, capers, fingerling potatoes, pickled red onions, hard-cooked eggs, citrus vinaigrette), - Steak Frites: (grilled and carved all-natural hanger steak, roasted asparagus, julienne-cut fries, demi glace, horseradish crème fraîche), - Halibut in a Lemon Sauce, - Moules-frites: (carlsbad black mussels sautéed in butter, white wine, garlic, shallots, red chili flakes, tomatoes, fines herbes), - Warm Dark Chocolate Ganache Cake, and - Classis Creme Brulee. ALL EXCELLENT! I can honestly say the weakest of all the dishes we ordered was the Salade Nicoise

As a follower of Julia Child's and a French foodie at heart, try this restaurant you won't be disappointed. Till next summer Javier, "Au Revoir,"

“Quality Depends on Owner Being Present”
Reviewed July 15, 2014

During the week when the owner was present, this could not have been a better French bistro for service, food quality and smiles. Not so on the crowded weekend when we entertained for business reasons. It was both expensive and embarrassing.
The food was ill-prepared and the service was terrible, almost as though the serving staff had never worked in a restaurant.
Really too bad since it did not live up to first impressions from prior visits.

“excellent service, mediocre food”
Reviewed July 3, 2014

We ordered asparagus soup, pear/blue cheese salad, salmon, chicken, a halibut special, and other dishes. Everything was acceptable but not outstanding. The service was excellent. The noise level was a bit high at first but calmed down as people at other tables were served and started eating.

“Foodies Heaven”
Reviewed June 29, 2014

I don't know if I should tell more people about this place because I'm greedy and selfish and want to keep this accessible to me, but that would be wrong to the hardworking people at Cafe Blue. The food, the food, the food. Oh, so delicious. Traditional French cuisine at a very Average-American price. Steak tartare was tender in texture with a fresh bite of soy sauce and lime, if meat could be refreshing, this was it. The Vol au Vent (creamy mushroom sauce in puff pastry), sinfully rich and indulgent. Steak Frites - the French know their fries, shoe string cut crispy addictive morsels of lightly salted starch, I love you. The steak was well-prepared, nicely seasoned that allowed the fine cut of meat to shine. The asparagus gave me the illusion that I was eating healthy. Ratatouli Polenta was better than my recipe. The vegies were cooked to perfection, still firm and juicy. Lava cake tasted of high quality dark chocolate. Blue cheese wedge salad was very good. The cream of asparagus soup was rich and decadent, but the asparagus flavor definitely shined. The service was excellent. Helpful, friendly, professional and accommodating. This was one of my favorite meals. Easy street parking. Thank you CAFE BLUE.
