It was a gloomy cold day but walking through the botanical garden made it a lot brighter. The folliage and plants were awesome. So serene and beautiful. I am a horticulture person anyway so totally in my element....

This free exhibit is worth the short walk. There are two beautiful orchid displays and you shouldn't miss reading the markers about the carnivorous plants. The gardens give you a quiet, shaded moment out of the sun and really are quite peaceful. I overheard a mother responding the comment that children wouldn't find them very interesting , by saying how much her children used to love coming. Currently, the lily pond is being re-done.

compliments to the Balboa Park staff for taking such wonderful care of the park during such trying economic times. The lily pond was being cleaned and maintained while we were there, but all the other gardens and fountains had been meticulously cleaned and the water was sparkling. The Botanical building is a beautiful short visit - great to escape the heat in the summer and to warm up in the winter. The displays are mature and well tended, and provide many ideas for folks who would like to try their hand at tropical or fern gardening. There was also a display0 of an herb garden that gave me lots of ideas for making mine look fuller and more interesting. This building is one of the most photographed "views" in the park; visiting is well worth it if you have time.

I nearly burned up a nice digital SLR Nikon shooting the wonders of the flora. For a photographer, the light inside is incredible and a huge advantage for finding striking close-ups of beautiful blossoms....The building is so striking it is had to take in at once.

A virtual botanical palace. This place is one of the world's largest steel-and-wood-lathe structures in the world. Stately and yet very inviting. It's also free (donations accepted).
