Not a bad place. Good location and view. Menu ok. Staff ok. Food fine. Perhaps little over priced but not for San Diego.

We stayed at the Hilton Bayfront this last weekend. We ate at this restaurant Friday night because we arrived after 8:00 pm. The enjoy an amazing dinner. The next morning we went to the buffet, The service and the food was all amazing. Sunday morning was totally different, As we came out of the elevator we notice a long line into the restaurant. As we stood in line we noticed most of the seats and tables where empty in the restaurant. I ask why the delay, when there were seat available, I was told they under staffed the restaurant. We waited for 20 minutes to sit inn a empty space. The food as always was delicious , But the service was not. You could see the expressions on peoples faces when they were sat, That they also dismayed by the number of empty seats and tables.

We dined here each morning that we stayed at the hotel and had both the continental and hot buffet. The food was delicious with a great variety. The omelet station had an amazing assortment of ingredients. Great scones, breads, fruit, bacon and assorted other items. Also had a delicious reuben there one night for dinner when we didn't feel like going out.

We ate here for a quick lunch in between meetings during a large conference. The restaurant was full with a couple of small tables open. My party of 2 was seated immediately and then served quickly. The food was good too. Eat here if you are in the area.

Vela is better than expected on the lower floor of Hilton Bayfront. It’s spacious, accessible, and the service (Nicholas) is good. Their Caesar salad ($10) was generous, and I asked for gluten free so the croutons were taken off. I skipped steak for an additional $12 ontop; maybe next time. We also had Steak Quesadilla ($18). It was actually filling with a choice of sides: greens, fries, or fruit bowl. The fish tacos should be called crispy fish-in-tortilla with lightly cheesey green salad inside. None of the items were spicy, although there was a tiny cup of mild salsa on the side. Heirloom Tomato salad is a better choice for people who also enjoy cheese. They could have hired more help, but the food was not long to come out. I prefer Vela to Odysea upstairs, which is much louder and busier. Vela Bar takes cash or visa/Amex. For Urban Destinations Amenities guests, the program permits $35 total per couple, including tip, that can be charged to the room. I would not call this a romantic place to dine. Like Odysea, it is more similar to a sports bar. However, for guests it is closer than walking across from the Convention Centre to the historic gas light and pub quarter. Parking is still costly and needs to be validated behind a pillar facing the escalator, which descends to Vela beyond the bell hop and hotel reception. (The other escalator on the left is closer to Starbucks).
