“Best steak in San Diego and great service.”
Reviewed March 11, 2013 via mobile

Donovans has a lot of competition as far as a perfectly cooked steak in San Diego, but it is by far the best. I have to admit, TruLuck is a close contender, but even Donovans' appetizers are to die for. I personally like the downtown location better than the La Jolla location. Excellent service.

“Great service and the food was good too”

Very knowing staff helps when you are not sure what kind of cut of meat you might want. A very good place to eat as several people are dedicated to serving you.

“Five star service and an exceptional meal”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

We brought in a large party on short notice and had the best experience of the entire week in San Diego. A short wait at the bar set the tone for the rest of the evening. Female bartender (can't remember her name) is a true hospitality rock star -- quick, perceptive, and a tribute to whoever was smart enough to hire her. Same can be said of the young man who took care of our table for nearly three hours. The food was exceptional and the service could not have been better. Well done!

“Great experience”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

We were in town for a conference and since we had a wonderful experience at Donovan's three years ago, we were looking forward to trying it again.
Our table of 6 was ready after a quick drink in the bar. I love the way they serve their cocktails. A single large ice cube in a rocks glass. Classy, a little different. The pour had to be 3oz for a scotch rocks. The serving team was excellent. Knowledgable about the menu, gave us the price for each special.
We ordered crab cakes and lobster bisque. Both were excellent. The Spinach salad had a lot of mustard in the dressing, which we really enjoyed. The chopped salad was too large and did not have a lot of flavor. Between the group, we had a Veal Chop, 10 oz peppercorn filet, 20 oz bone in NY and a rib eye. Everything was prepared exactly as ordered. All of the meats were tender and flavorful. The au gratin potato side, ordered by almost everyone, got rave reviews.
We had read the reviews on the crems brulee and ordered several. It was OK, but nothing really special.
Prices are pretty steep. Entree's included veggies and starch. Steaks from $52-$72. Including one cocktail, a bottle of wine, shared app and desert, it ran $120 per person. The service and quality made it worth it. Special occasion dining at its best!
