Free museum, runs on donations. Consists of six rooms of art. Beautiful pieces, just not a lot and not a lot of variety. Worth a walk thru (especially for the price).

“Ahh, a free art museum with great art!”
Reviewed June 23, 2012

The musuem was beautiful with great pieces of art. I took my 8;6;4 yr olds, who enjoyed the size and the varity of art (they have visited many art museums and knew how to act). It helped to have a good understanding of Biblical history/stories and periods of art for explaining to works of art. The ropes keeping us from the art were annoying at first (about 1 1/2ft from the paintings) but helped with children and enthusiastic viewer(me) from comming to close. Would have helped to have more info at each painting (at least the portraits).

“A little jewell”
Reviewed May 26, 2012

This small museum inside of Balboa Park is free. One of the most interesting elements of the museum is the history of the families that made the museum possible, the history is told on panels inside the museum. Of particular interest are pieces by Murillo, William Merrit Chase, Corot, and tapestries. Our visit was only around 30 minutes but the prices was right. The architecture may be of interest to visitors alone - our youngest team member states "don't take it for granite."

“Free attraction in Balboa Park, EXCELLENT story time every month”
Reviewed May 22, 2012

This is a small museum with free admission. The artwork is very good, and audio tours are available for $3, or $5 for 2. These are always very helpful in explaining painters and paintings, as well as pointing out small details which can be missed when you just gloss over a painting. It's up to you whether you wish to spend 15 minutes breezing in and out or an hour really looking at the pictures or listening to the audio and really "seeing" the artwork. Nevertheless, it makes you feel like you have done something intellectual for an hour before heading outside to enjoy the rest of beautiful Balboa Park. The elderly male volunteers dressed in their black suits can seem a bit unfriendly, but if you ignore that at the start, this is an excellent place to visit. The very BEST thing about it though is the free monthly story time by a very talented and gifted storyteller who makes a painting that she has chosen to speak about come to life. You certainly learn a lot and can be moved by her storytelling. The stories are for 5 year old and up, and her narration is at the right level for kids and adults alike. I can't wait to go back next month for story time!
