Another place where you get to see a 3D Imax movie. Their movies are excellent, especially the Titans of the Ice Age. You can easily spend a couple of hours here. Kids loved the dinosaurs.

Great museum. When I first walked in and started on the first floor I was like this is not very good. We watched one of the 3D movies and it kept the 9 year old interested.

Then we went upstairs. The skull exhibit was fantastic. Skulls of every type of creature. The robotic dinosaurs were really cool. The first three I saw were half skulls and half "flesh". The the models were fully covered. Very nice. The robots were a little intense for the 9 year old. A interactive fossil excavation on touch screen was interesting.

We skipped the fourth floor, which was a photography exhibit.

The bottom level was amazing. All about mammoths. They had the replica of the near intact mammoth found in Russia. Very nice exhibit.

Wish we had more time to spend there.

They loved exploring the different rooms and especially watching the movies! They watched all 3 movies and were really interested in the content. All information was appropriate and well received by my kids.

There is a park a short walk away. We left and ate lunch then returned. Worked very well.

We love to visit natural history museums in whatever city we are in, so we were really looking forward to this one since it is fairly famous and in a big museum area. The building itself is rather large and has four floors of exhibits, but there actually isn't much content in each exhibit. They do have some pretty interesting parts of the exhibits (especially the dinosaur bones for us!) but there really just wasn't a high concentration of the interesting parts. Our small, local museum which costs $5 to get into has much more than this large, expensive one.

Not a fault of the museum, but be forewarned that parking is TERRIBLE in that area.

The mammoth exhibit in the lower level (possibly temporary) was our favorite. We liked the water exhibit too, but we were kind of rushed out of there since the first floor closes before the rest of the museum for some reason.

My mom saw an ad for the dinosaur exhibit so while in Balboa Park, we hit up the museum and I'm glad we did! It was a really nice museum, not too big and not too small. They played a couple informative movies throughout the day. We watched one about oceans and it was very informative but entertaining for kids.
