we stayed at the dolphin for five days. It was ten minutes from sunset cliff beach. it was very close to everything we wanted to see. The owner even drove us down to get a rental car. The night clerk suggested pizza nova the lamb shanks were to die for. Point Loma seafood was very good and just across the street. It is a very quiet location. We took the ferry to corondo island and ate at tartine the mussels were fantastic also homemade passion fruit sorbet,so good we went back for breakfast.on Shelter island drive is a deli at the marina great cheap breakfast and lunch. Many surfers at sunset cliffs also can jump off cliffs. great people clean small room maybe not great for big family. We were very happy with our choice.

I used to live in San Diego and wanted to show my wife around. The Murdocks were great hosts. The rooms are spotless clean . We stayed on the top floor and loved the view of the harbor. Everything is right at your finger tips. Alan Murdock gave us some good restaurants to eat at and reminded me of some great spots for my wife to see. At the end of our trip the bill for staying at such a nice place put a smile on my face. All thumbs up for this make you feel at home motel !!

We stayed here 1 night before and after a cruise. This is a small and older style motel but very clean and comfortable, a very good value. Staff and owners couldn't have been more helpful, they even printed our airline boarding passes for us. We were able to check in before noon both times. Walking distance to many nice restaurants. Short distance to airport and cruise terminal. Seems to be in a nice area of town, we walked most everywhere we went and never felt unsafe. If you don't want to pay high prices to stay in large hotels with amenities you'll never use I would recommend the Dolphin Motel.

We booked this motel based on what we saw from their website. It looked great. OK, so it was right accross from the landing where we needed to be....but...We were HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED! Ok, the owner, I guess he was, was pleasant enough....but the rooms were not at all as depicted on their website, neither was the overal appearance of this motel. There are many other motel/hotels in the area that provide bigger and cleaner rooms, at a much lower price! To say these rooms were small would be an understatement!

This motels set up was such that I expected to see residents with clothes lines stretched from one balcony to the other, and clothes drying in the breeze. I didn't like this dive at all!

January 2009 spent 4 nights in my favorite city, San Diego. Stayed all four nights in my favorite spot, the Dolphin Motel.Three years ago, stayed there for the first time and have stayed there every year since,The Dolphin Motel is situated in Point Loma, a beautiful area and convenient to all points of Interest in San Diego. The motel is exceptional value for the money. The rooms impeccable and grounds are extremely well kept However what sets this motel apart from the countless others I have stayed in over the years is the owner Holley, his family and the staff. One is greeted and treated like family. They are collectively ,a class act.
A point of interest. on the advice of Holley, three years ago, he suggested I pay a visit to Cabrillo National Monument Park.Absolutely spectacular view of San Diego.Once again to Holley and all at the Dolphin thanks again for treating my family like your family and we hope to see you again next year.

We have visited SD twice before, staying at the Homewood Suites in Del Mar and Motel 6 respectively. This time we wanted to try a location in Point Loma for a number of good reasons. After considering several options (most of the Pt. Loma properties are clustered close together) we opted to try the Dolphin based mainly on price and TripAdvisor reviews.

We drove in after dark on I-8 and turned onto Nimitz Ave. at the end of the freeway which brought us right to the Dolphin. Our reservation was accepted and we checked in without problem. Our room was on the second floor which was fine. On first impression we were a bit surprised at the compactness of the room which reminded me of some I had stayed in throughout the UK. Apart from that the room was clean to an acceptable standard and everything that was in it worked accordingly. The place has a kind of '70's feel to it which we have experienced at other SoCal accomodations!

We found that the Dolphin was a combination of several pluses and a couple of minuses. The pluses included being situated in Pt. Loma which is a self contained community with most amenities within easy walking distance of the Dolphin. There is a great selection of restaurants, C stores, laundromat, gas stations etc. nearby and the streets are safe to walk after dark. In many ways it resembles most large towns that you would find on the Great Plains with that same "Howdy neighbour" friendliness. Pt. Loma is also strategically located in SD to provide quick access to all of the local attractions. We found that having wi-fi was a great convenience as we packed the laptop along. Morning coffee,OJ, and muffins are served in the outdoor courtyard which is very nice on warm sunny mornings. As many other commenters have mentioned the staff and management are very nice folks.

The minuses were few and rather petty. The hotel doesn't have a pool (one is located beside the office but belongs to the neighbouring Comfort Inn.) The hotel advertises itself as being on a quiet street (Garrison) which is technically correct, however it is sandwiched between two very busy streets (Rosecrans and Scott). My wife likes to sleep with the windows open and the early morning traffic was very noticeable. The street traffic can be overcome by closing the windows and turning on the circulating fan. Another irritant was the vibrating roar of fighter jets taking off from North Island late in the evening. The snug rooms are fine for sleeping but don't expect to entertain guests.

Overall we were quite satisfied with our stay at the Dolphin and would recommend it to anyone planning a trip to San Diego.

Our family stayed at the Dolphin on the night before chartering a bareboat out of Harbor Island, and this was a convenient and affordable place to stage our adventure. The reviews that talk about the friendliness factor are 100% accurate--I've never felt more welcome. The rooms are small and very clean...the quaintness reminded me of seaside places I've stayed in New England, and it was a nice change from cookie-cutter national chains. Without even being asked, the staff put a futon in our room to accommodate the fact that we had a queen and a single bed for four people.

It's also convenient to a bunch of restaurants (the owner recommended Point Loma Seafoods, right across the street, and it was terrific) and shopping, including West Marine and other gear shops.

We'll absolutely stay there again!
