The Dolphin Motel was great. We Stayed here two nights while in San Diego and couldn't have asked for a better place. Granted it's not huge or luxurious, but if you don't mind a smaller room it's wonderful. The staff is beyond incredible. They were so nice and gave us directions from hand written maps. They also gave us suggestions for where to eat and what we should do while on our vacation. The owners were very proper and nice also. I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to San Diego.

This is the best place you can stay in San Diego for your money.

The room isn't big but it has everything you need and why would you want to stay in your room all the time when you have San Diego to see?

The management went above and beyond what could be expected of them and were delighted to be of assistance. Even with the (usually) excellent service we (as Brits) have come to expect in the States, they really looked after us when we needed it and left us to our own devices when we wanted to be.

We would recommend buying a day pass for the bus to enable you to get around if you don't have a car. The stop is one block away and the service is very efficient.

This motel is best for couples and older travellers.

We would definitely return to the Dolphin.

My daughter and I stayed at the Dolphin Motel for two nights. We got in late on the first night and the man at the counter was a very helpful person who even suggested a restaurant and gave a coupon. The next morning my daughter was dieing for some milk. The owner ran to the store to pick some up for her. I don't know of anywhere that takes care of customers like that!! The hotel was very nice, quiet, clean, and affordable, with a great view of the bay. I was concerned about being in a city with just the two of us and being so far away from home but the staff took excellent care of us and helped us know places to go and things to see and do in San Diego. I can't say enough good things about this motel!! Hello to those and much thanks for taking care of the two Murfreesboro, TN girls :)

We went by Trip Advisor’s rating for this hotel and I can’t understand how it rated so highly. I wonder if we stayed somewhere different!!

The bed was the most uncomfortable one I have ever slept in – hard as a brick. The room was small and pokey – smaller than one we had in New York where you expect a small room. There was a veranda and at 6 am people were standing outside our window chatting and drinking their coffee.

Breakfast was half a muffin and coffee from an urn set up outside in the courtyard.

We had planned to stay 2 nights here but only stayed 1.

It was close to the water but miles from the main drag where friends of ours were. It was clean... completely white, no clock and a pokey shower/toilet area.

It was cheap I have to say, but the most disappointing hotel in our US vacation of 5 weeks. We stayed at a total of 11 Hotels - most of them from Trip Advisor - thank you :)

The Dolphin management was very friendly and the location was superb but we felt the room was somewhat dated. That being said, if you are looking for a great area to stay and are fine with a very basic room the Dolphin is a good choice (and likely cheaper than other chain options in the area).

The hotel is located close to the airport (but away from the flight pattern) and very close to the bay and scenic Shelter Island. There are many restaurants and bars within walking distance.

The room was slightly on the small size for two but had a large, fairly comfortable bed. The room was painted all in white tones; there is a small tv with cable and a fridge. The bathroom was tiny and had older fixtures and a basic shower.

There was a simple continental breakfast in the morning and the management team greeted us cheerfully when we came and went.

My husband and I spent 4 nights at the Dolphin in late May. Our room was spotless and the bed very comfortable. We had brought earplugs but never needed them. The owner was very helpful guiding us to our destinations with hand drawn maps. We definitely would book the Dolphin again.

Loved the place. Basic but perfectly adequate, comfortable clean rooms. Great location. Great sea breezes. Best value for your buck in San Diego. It's close to everywhere you want to be.

This obviously can't be guaranteed for everyone, but at least in my case, management went out of their way to be helpful with travel directions, and planning and in an urgent situation even provided transportation themselves.
