“Retro & Traveler friendly”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2013

Well maintained property and friendly employees
While I was there the staff were re-painting the property
they take good care of the place
Quiet area with little noise except the occassional ambulance
Grabbed a bannana and coffee in the morning
The owner was nice and gave me 7 nights free parking, I left my car parked there on business
They saved me some parking money and thats why I am giving them 5-stars
Thank you very much dolphin motel

Welcome back & thank you Mr. Chiang for taking the time to write about your return trip to our motel
We do get frequent business travelers (although not as much as vacationers) who stayed at our little motel.
We are glad to hear our modest, simple breakfast was adequate to your needs.
And yes, we do offer free parking during the "off season" to our guests
To our future guests: please contact us far in advance as we may start to fill up and our upstairs rooms get taken

By far this is an A+ Motel and like they will tell you it is kinda small but to Mike an I it felt like home away from home. We stayed there first time 4 nites and we did a cruise so we left our car there and when we came back our car was ok and we stayed 2 more days the room was kept clean it even smelted clean and trust me we drove from way south TX so we stayed at a few hotels and not so good ones but the Dolphin is nicer then some of the high dollar hotels and the owners and the help was very friendly and they told us about some good places to eat at and about some places to visit all in all would we stay there again YES we would but we dont know when we will be able to get back to San Diego and if I hear of any of our friends going that way i will be sure to tell them about The Dolphin so let me just say Thank You so much for all the help

From
Mike & Linda

Room Tip: this is a very clean little place

My husband and I stayed at the Dolphin Motel for two nights as the start of our journey up Highway 1 to San Francisco. This hotel was very close to the airport and right across the street from fishing and a very good place to eat seafood. The room was very small, but very clean and had a small frig. They had a simple breakfast of fruit, yogurt and bagels set up outside near the office. This is a great place to stay if you just need a room and don't need the frills. I probably wouldn't stay here with kids, but for adults it was adequate. The employees at the motel were all very nice and friendly.

Thank you Diane for writing about your recent vacation at our modest motel.
Every little review our wonderful guests write contributes to our future guests who want to get a glimpse of what our motel is, and if we are the right fit for their needs.
We are not a luxury place, nor do we advertise such, and we may not be the right fit for everyone
At the least, we are suitable for the budget-minded traveler if they just need a clean simple place
No thrills!

I stopped by on a roadtrip due to the high recommendations on my GPS chart - was friendly greeted and got a room on the first floor for $55 a night which seemed in sync with the rest of the many novels in the area. Room was small, nice bed, flatscreen, tiny bathroom but clean and in order. Large windows to the walkway outside compromise your privacy and the walls are thin as well! Slept great, took a hot shower with lots of water, had the odd muffin (?) and included shifty coffee for breakfast outside (!) and took off. Ok for an overnight stay but no more

YIKES, Mr Kristensen--value and location a 2 out of 5 rating !??--$55--WOW--We truly have one of the finest locations in southern California, and are beautifully located one block from San Diego Bay-One can walk across the street and eat any meal literally over the water. We are located in the heart of what is best in San Diego. --I respectfully suggest a map check--. I am glad you "slept great " and had a good shower. We all try to do our best for our guests--they deserve nothing less.Sorry you felt the breakfast muffins were " odd " (from Costco ). and the coffee shifty !?!? (Yuban), got a full closet. Sir, you wrote the room was clean but only gave a 2 out of 5 rating ??? Regarding the windows compromising privacy--they have curtains. Best Regards Alan Murdock-Owner with my dad.

Had to catch a early morning flight from San Diego airport, so I had a quick search for cheap motels in the area. I came across the dolphin hotel. It was definately a good choice.
Now lets be honest im a bit of a winger but didnt really have anything to winge about this time.
Clean Sheets, Room and Curtains
FREE WIFI that was quick and had good signal
FREE safe parking right out front.
Clerk looked after us
Clerk Kept an eye on the security cameras!
Didnt have time to sit Down for breakfast but ended up grabbing a nice coffee muffin and yogurt!
BEST RESTURANT ACROSS THE ROAD CALLED: The Pearl.

Only downside is we wanted to watch a movie LCD tv but no DVD player :(
Thanks

Thank you very much for this most generous & pleasant review
Being a family-owned motel, we do our best with the limited resources we have (this is an older motel & rooms are small)
I agree with your statement, the best security is the people who watch the cameras.
Sometimes we do get stiff customers who have higher expectation. But are unwilling to pay higher prices at other locations. In that case, we may not have what they are looking for.
If only every guest we meet are as nice as you guys.
We hope all our future guests do their research beforehand to see if we have what they are looking for.

This hotel was great. Affordable, clean, great shower, HDTV with many channels, breakfast... WHITE linens (no 70s brown here). Front desk was helpful with dinner recommendations. Great location across from boat docks. Loved it!

White = clean
We want to convey we are clean to all our guests
We end up throwing away alot more towels/sheets though
Others' color sheets will "cover" the stains
Hope you come back and visit us

The Dolphin can best described as a niche motel....unsuitable for some but beloved by many. The intricacies of this unique little place include "no fish in room", quiet hours....which translates to simple consideration for other human beings, and a shampoo-less shower that can be rectified with a .25 travel bottle, from the front desk. I read many reviews on Trip Advisor and I found all to be very accurate, however, the one aspect of this motel that can't be reduced to words is the true and honest concern that every employee has, for your enjoyable stay at their "home." You get the feeling that you are lodging with family, here.....real people who take an sincere interest in you and how they can best assist you in making your stay, as pleasant as possible. When my son and I checked in we were told of several places to visit that would give us an overview of San Diego. First, Cabrillo...where you can see how the entire area is laid out. Next Sunset Cliffs and the walking trail along the breathtaking coast. Next La Jolla and the children's pool...where we saw seal pups being born and 200 other seals sunning themselves, oblivious to our curiosity. It was wonderfully refreshing not to be told to visit Seaworld or the zoo.....for we are travelers and not tourists.

The rooms are simple and serviceable. Snow white in color with a flat screen TV on the wall, refrigerator, 2 night tables, a comfortable bed with dense pillows, a small bathroom with a shower surround, sink and venting window......this is not the place to go to be pampered and spoiled. You will save real money here since the highest cost room is about 75.00....starting rates between 50.00 and 55.00. The location is outstanding with easy access to Rosecrans, I 5, the airport, Shelter and Harbor Islands. The free breakfast includes bananas, OJ, coffee, tea, milk, yogurt, and muffins. I went to a local Sprouts market and picked up some great granola and had it with my milk, for breakfast every morning.

If you want your trip to include an interesting place to stay, wonderfully caring people to watch over you, and some extra dollars saved in YOUR pocket, The Dolphin is a unique find. Kudos to Horace and his staff.

Room Tip: Harbor view rooms are 5.00 extra. You don't get a great view but I think it probably was worth t...

First off, thank you very much for staying at our little corner of the world
What a thorough descriptions!

Prices vary depending on season, weekday/weekend, holidays. Please call early to get prices and availability
You are correct, we are across the street from the "harbor" (not ocean). There are boats and seafood eats, you will not see waves splashing on the cliffs or dolphins jumping around! =)
