“Paradise Lost”
Reviewed September 8, 2006

Had 2 rooms (792-793) on Hibiscus Lane. We booked for 3 nights
(Sept 6-7-8). Was very specific and had requested way in advance for adjoining renovated rooms having heard some of the comments on Trip Advisor. Check in experience on the night of 9/6/06 should have forewarned me. The rooms are so oudated, carpets are so badly stained, grout dirty, toilets espcially behind the toilet seat grimy. We always bring Lysol and clean for ourselves anyway., but this was too much .The beds were very high to reach. The furniture including nightstands were extremely small and the armoire needed major repainting. When I complained about the condition of the 2 rooms, the front desk said this was the "rustic look". Looked filthy and worn down to me. Very different from what the web-site looked.

If you are in to the "Cottage worn-down distressed look", this is the place for you. As far as I was concerned the rooms needed MAJOR renovation and upkeep.

The new conference hall (Sunset Ballroom) where we had our meeting is beautiful and sparklingly clean. The deck facing the bay was gorgeous. Alas if only the guest rooms were of the same class and vintage, we would have stayed all the 3 nights.

We just couldn't stand it so we had to hassle & check out the next day and stayed at the nearby Hilton San Diego Resort which was cleaner, brighter and easier to manage. The Hilton San Diego Resort was just purchased by the same owner of the Paradise Point.

Our family of four (Dad & Mom -40 yoa & twin sons - 5yoa) stayed at Paradise Point 8/28-9/1 in a Lanai Garden room-King bed & queen sofa bed; desk/table w/ 3 chairs; armoire with TV and smal refrigerator; large walk-in closet with luggage racks, plenty of hangers & space and a programable safe; split bath (tub and toilet separate room from sink and large countertop); and a nice, big patio w/ two adirondak chairs and table surrounded with foliage and flowers. Very private. Some room patios are right on sidewalks, roads, walkways and parking lots. There are five pools - (1) "Adult Pool", must be 18 or older; (2) "Children Pool", large round 4' deep pool with center fountain where warm water comes out to warm pool--kid's thought it was their own lil' hottub; (3) "Main Pool" - zero entry on one side - food and drinks served - next to fitness center and spa; (4) "Meadow Pool" 3'6" to 8' deep- small oval pool--two washers (1.25) and dryers (1.00) here for use; and (5) "Waterfall Pool" - zero entry to 4' deep, separate hot tub, 2 washers and dryers for use, nice cushioned chairs. This was the farthest from our room - but the one we used most. We ate at the main pool, the Barefoot Bar & Grill and thru room service- all were good, fresh & hot. "The Island Market" (store) has everything from snacks, milk, beer, wine, clothes and gifts to jewelry, cards, etc. Just 2 miles down the road (left out of the property-we had a car) my husband found a grocery/deli and a liquor store. We rented a boat one day, a quad (bike for four) one day and relaxed the rest. This was at the end of our trip --already had stayed with friends and done Legoland, Disneyland, California Adventure and Wild Animal Park @ San Diego Zoo--great place to relax. Oh, by the way - while at PP --multiple men were working on replacing the carpet in rooms around the property--it is time, I washed our sons' feet multiple times --I am sure it is hard to keep them clean with people walking around barefoot (or not taking off shoes ) and into the room--can't steam clean between each guest--carpet would never dry.

  • Liked — Beatiful grounds for walking around.
  • Disliked — Carpet - but, it is being replaced currently.

Wonderful stay! We spend 4 wonderful days the end of August.
I was with my 81 year old Mother and 14 year old son and we found something fun to do for everyone!
Check-in wasn't the best. First gave us the wrong room. We then walked all the way back to the office dragging our luggage. Our room then wasn't ready. We went to sea world and when we returned many hours later room still wasn't ready. I need to say the room was worth the wait. Very comfortable beds, bath products to die for and a view of a duck pond that was breath taking. Food was good, including room service. Pool service and the pool its self was great. A little costly drinks and food at the pool. We loved the grill for any meal. I will always remember watching my Mother and son play putt-putt golf and all the laughs.
I was expecting a little warmer bay water but we still managed to go wading. The grounds were wonderful for anytime of the day walks or even resting at a bench. So tropicial.
We had a wonderful evening one night watching a dive in movie at the pool. (first my Mother had ever seen)
All of the staff in general bent over backwards to make sure we had a great stay.
All in all we will be back!!!!!

  • Liked — Tropicial setting

We are a couple (from Scotland) with no children, who stayed for 5 nights at the resort between 20-24 August. We knew that this a 'family' resort before we booked so weren't surprised to be surrounded with small children on arrival but we were pleasantly surprised with the peace and quiet available at the 'Adults Only' pool. We have stayed at some quality adult resorts in the Carribean that have much noisier pools.

On the negative side, the car park fees at $20 per night are extortionate, but all American hotels tend to rip-off guests with cars, don't they? We had to pay $28 per night in Santa Monica!

The room was as expected, dirty carpet, what do you expect when most guests spend their time at the pool or on a sandy beach? The air conditioning was noisy at night and the room could have done with a paint job, but overall we were very satisfied.

The Balleen restuarant was very good, although beware, there are lots of noisy kids there in the evening if you are looking for a quiet and romantic dinner.

There are lots of ducks and other animals around, we saw a skunk one evening and the atmosphere is very relaxing. We were unable to get internet access because the Business Centre was closed, but the concierge desk put us in touch with a good Internet Cafe in Pacific Beach.

Would we return? Probably yes, given the location and access to San Diego's attractions.

Regards

Cathy & Ian Gunn

You can believe those other reviewers who said, this place needs lots of attention. It is clear the owners are just raking in the tourist dollars w/o reinvesting any back into the property. The lobby furniture is old and dirty, the lagoon is closer to a swamp. The walls in the rooms are paper thin, with many noises during the night coming from inside the room (the old refridgerator, old air conditioner, and old squeaky bed). This is no place for a light sleeper or persons without children. One positive was the resturant, good service and food. hotel workers were nice enough, although I needed a supervisor to approve cancelling my second night without charge. You see not only do they have a 7 seven day notice to cancel w/o charge, there is a 48 hr notice to change the current reservation. while i made reservations for 2 nights in less than 7 seven days i was required to pay one night in advance....when i wanted to check out (since we could not sleep a wink the first night) the front desk kindly stated that you may leave, but warned I'd be charged for the 2nd night anyway. they put up a small fight, but relented after I described how unsatisfactory the rooms (the 2nd room change) were.

My husband and I took our two sons, ages 8 months and 21 months, on vacation to San Diego. We chose to stay at Paradise Point, as we stayed there a year ago and really enjoyed it. This stay was very different, though. The line at check-in was over 40 minutes long, which seemed like forever when waiting with two tired kids. After spending less than 10 minutes in our room I noticed that the bottoms of our feet, and our babies hands and knees were black from the dirty carpet. We had to lay a blanket on the floor for them to play on the rest of the vacation. We asked for a crib at check-in (we had brought one with us, but needed a second to accommodate our 2 boys)...four hours and four phone calls later we finally got our crib at almost 9pm. Room service was prompt, but the food was marginal at best.

On a positive note, the pools were enjoyable when they weren't too crowded. The grounds were nice to walk around, except for the room service trays that had not been picked up from outside various rooms. However, we will not be returning to Paradise Point again- this hotel needs some serious maintenance and upgrading!

Wonderful property...like being in Hawaii...great pool with food service, perfect for mai tai's! We had a room on the interior...there are rooms that surround the bay with wonderful views, but we really liked our room which had sliding doors that overlooked a pond with ducks! Restaurant has a koi pond (that the kids can feed) with a singer on a stage overlooking the bay. Great buffet for breakfast...Wonderful hotel lobby...has a 18 hole miniature golf course...FUN...also can rent bicycles, play tennis, ping pong tables...has a marina where we rented a speedboat for an hour. One of the best things about the property is that it is 5 minutes from Sea World. It's kind of a big place - only 1 story bungalows with 2 rooms to a building... we rented 1 room and the kids had the other. They have golf carts that will shuttle you around the property. ASK FOR A ROOM with a BAY view and you can roast marshmellows and make S'mores on the fire pits on the sand right outside your room.

  • Liked — Pool, location to Sea World, restaurant, ability to rent boats, tennis, bikes
  • Disliked — It's pretty big... need to walk around alot...or ask for a golf cart to shuttle you.
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask for a room with a bay view, they also have fire pits right outside the room!
