The location just can't be beat. Little Italy is an alternative to staying in the gaslamp area, and we are glad we did. La Pensione is in the dead center of all the action in Little Italy. What's here is plenty of Italian restaurants (naturally); the top coffee shop is right downstairs / attached to the hotel. Also the Ballast Point Brewery is a few blocks North. And hey you can walk to the gas lamp in 20 minutes or so.

Our hotel room was small and suited our needs fine. There are not a lot of frills at this establishment, but the rooms are updated with a clean modern chic look. Our window looked right out over India street, which we enjoyed. You are in the middle of the action so there can be some street noise, depending on who's out to party.

The hotel has a pretty slow elevator - if you take the stairs you'll note that the layout is a bit odd because the hotel combines two main buildings. It surrounds a central court where the coffeshop patrons downstairs like to hang out. Quite pleasant. The price point is generally kept on the low side, which adds to the great value.

I would definitely recommend this property along with its location.

Thanks for your review and for staying with us!

We love being in the middle of all the Little Italy action, and it looks like you had a wonderful time too. You definitely got a lot of exploring in and we hope you'll be back to San Diego and La Pensione Hotel to do even more!

This little boutique hotel is a lovely place to stay in Little Italy, San Diego, which has some great restaurants and easy access to the trolley.

The rooms themselves are big enough but on the small side as things usually go in USA, however they are clean and tidy, with all the comforts you really need.

Internet access over the wifi is spotty at best, you are far better off using a network cable (need to bring your own) - the internet access is fast and free, something you don't get everywhere.

Street noise can be a bit of an issue on Friday and Saturday nights, however ear plugs will solve the issue, or asking on check-in for a room on the other side from the main street.

The little pizza place at the bottom of the hotel around the corner is a must.

Room Tip: Bring a network/ethernet cable with you for more reliable in-room internet access

Thanks for staying with us and for leaving a review! We know Internet access is important to you, and we're proud to be one of the few hotels to offer free internet in downtown. We're still working on options for Wifi and hope to have that resolved soon. And yes, that pizza place (Na Pizza) is also a staff favorite! You'll catch us there for lunch all the time.

We hope you can make it back to Little Italy soon!

Let me start by saying that we loved our stay at La Pensione and would recommend them to anyone! The location can't be beat, in the heart of Little Italy and just blocks from the bay. The rooms are small, but cozy, and with a city like San Diego you're not going to be in your hotel room much. The staff was very helpful and the hotel has an overall modern appeal. There's even a nice coffee shop in the beautiful open courtyard. That being said, with a few minor adjustments it could be an easy five star hotel for a three star price:

- Wifi: They have wifi, but if you have a room on the 4th floor like we did the signal does not reach. There is a hardwired line, but I only had a tablet with me. A simple $100 wifi repeater placed on the 2nd or 3rd floor would permanently fix this problem.
- Alarm clock: None in the room! I'm not looking for something fancy, just a cheap $10 clock.
- Welcome packet: Missing. Again not looking for much, just a welcome from the hotel, some basic information about the area, wifi information, cab information, and pen and paper for jotting down notes.
- Scuffs on the wall: I understand this happens, but a Mr. Clean magic eraser could easily clean these up.

All these issues would have greatly increased my rating and don't require a large financial investment. I would like to say again that despite all this I greatly enjoyed my stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in San Diego. Thanks for making our stay so memorable!

Room Tip: See if you can get a room with a view. Ours looked out on the bay and was amazing!

We arrived late (10pm) on Sunday Feb 16th, to this boutique hotel which is about a 15 minute car ride from the airport. This European-style boutique hotel (read: no room service, no restaurant) provided us with all the amenities we required (large comfortable bed, hair dryer, toiletry items). The shower and toilet are located in a separate area, but the sink and mirror are in the common area. This is typical of a boutique hotel, so we were not put off by the size of the room or the arrangement of the sink/shower. The hotel is very clean, and everything appears to be fresh and new. There was also a bar fridge under the sink, which is useful. $190 for 2 nights in downtown San Diego, within walking distance of many great Italian restaurants - what's to complain about? The front desk staff provided us with an Ethernet cable to connect to the free internet too. Nice. There is a lovely coffee shop literally around the corner where we enjoyed two breakfasts out on the patio. Very convenient.

Room Tip: We had a room off the centre court, which tunneled noise up from downstairs, but in the room it was...

Thanks for leaving us a review! Sounds like you are quite the boutique hotel lovers and can really appreciate all the amenities and creative space usage boutique properties are known for. We're happy that we can offer private ensuite bathrooms in every room (instead of the shared bathrooms many European hotels offer), makes a world of difference to your travel experience! Glad you had such a great stay with us and we hope you can visit us and Caffe Italia again soon!

I stayed three nights after arriving in San Diego. It's about $12 for a taxi from the airport, and a good rate for the room. Room was small--fine for me solo-- but very well designed with excellent materials. My room had a fine view toward the County Building and the harbor! The cozy feeling and friendliness was great. The location is close to the airport, right in Little Italy, a walk to the harbor area. From the harbor there are ships to tour, good urban walking areas, monuments, and also boats to Coronado and maybe elsewhere. Good restaurants, both in Little Italy and on the water. I wasn't getting wifi in my room, so the desk gave me a connection to a cable that worked.

This quaint hotel was perfect for our two night stay. The bed was comfortable and the linens a crisp, clean white. The marble and glass bath was beautiful, so what more could one ask? We could ask for newer, fluffier towels, but whatever! We enjoyed walking around and dining at great restaurants, so it's all about the location.

Room Tip: We got a small room, which was fine with us.

Hello, thanks for choosing to stay with us and for leaving us this great review! I'll take a look at our towels and see what we can do about that. Thanks for leaving us that feedback. Sounds like you two had a fun time exploring the neighborhood and walking around. Little Italy is a great neighborhood for that. The hotel was adorable and nice - but with two caveats: the bed was hard and there isn't enough parking at the hotel for all rooms. The second item ended up working itself out though: parking is free on the street from 6pm-8am, so if you're an early riser (zoo opens at 9am!), it gives you a reason to get moving in the morning! lol We also had trouble finding places to put our suitcases because the rooms are SMALL...we ended up just putting our big suitcase on the floor in front of the door (heaven help us in the event of a fire!). VERY nicely finished room and common areas though and the front desk staff was polite and helpful. There is a cute courtyard behind the hotel and a pizza place and coffee place attached to the courtyard too. WiFi exists, but is spotty.

Room Tip: If you NEED wifi, try to get a room overlooking the courtyard - we were told those rooms had the bes...

Hi, thanks for choosing to stay with us and for giving us this feedback! I'm sorry for your experience with our beds. I hope you had a great sleep otherwise, as all of our mattresses are soft pillowtops. Parking and wifi are our biggest priorities, as we know that's most important to our guests. Thanks for your patience as we work out solutions. Most guests are able to fit their luggage underneath the hanging clothes rack near the door, but I know some luggage are just too big to do so. So, we'll look into different, creative solutions for luggage storage in the rooms. Thanks for the heads up.
