“Great location in the heart of Little Italy.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2014

This quaint hotel was perfect for our two night stay. The bed was comfortable and the linens a crisp, clean white. The marble and glass bath was beautiful, so what more could one ask? We could ask for newer, fluffier towels, but whatever! We enjoyed walking around and dining at great restaurants, so it's all about the location.

Room Tip: We got a small room, which was fine with us.

Hello, thanks for choosing to stay with us and for leaving us this great review! I'll take a look at our towels and see what we can do about that. Thanks for leaving us that feedback. Sounds like you two had a fun time exploring the neighborhood and walking around. Little Italy is a great neighborhood for that. We're glad you had a good time and hope to see you in Little Italy and at our hotel again soon!

The hotel was adorable and nice - but with two caveats: the bed was hard and there isn't enough parking at the hotel for all rooms. The second item ended up working itself out though: parking is free on the street from 6pm-8am, so if you're an early riser (zoo opens at 9am!), it gives you a reason to get moving in the morning! lol We also had trouble finding places to put our suitcases because the rooms are SMALL...we ended up just putting our big suitcase on the floor in front of the door (heaven help us in the event of a fire!). VERY nicely finished room and common areas though and the front desk staff was polite and helpful. There is a cute courtyard behind the hotel and a pizza place and coffee place attached to the courtyard too. WiFi exists, but is spotty.

Room Tip: If you NEED wifi, try to get a room overlooking the courtyard - we were told those rooms had the bes...

Hi, thanks for choosing to stay with us and for giving us this feedback! I'm sorry for your experience with our beds. I hope you had a great sleep otherwise, as all of our mattresses are soft pillowtops. Parking and wifi are our biggest priorities, as we know that's most important to our guests. Thanks for your patience as we work out solutions. Most guests are able to fit their luggage underneath the hanging clothes rack near the door, but I know some luggage are just too big to do so. So, we'll look into different, creative solutions for luggage storage in the rooms. Thanks for the heads up.

Great hotel to stay at. But the thing about this hotel is the staff. Very helpful and willing to help with this and that. Price can't be beat. If I'm ever am back in San Diego I wouldn't bother to stay anywhere else

What a great place to stay when in San Diego. La Pensione is located in the heart of Little Italy. The rooms are small, this is after all an old building city hotel, but it has been completely renovated and the rooms have a chic ambiance, all gray, silver, white and clean lines and super high ceilings (15 ft?) make them feel not cramped. The room was a bit musty smelling but the windows open. The bathroom was all black slate tile and a rain shower. Nice fireplace in the lobby for warming by.

The location can't be beat, close to the airport, a few blocks from the water and within walking distance of downtown areas. And... on Saturday morning the farmers market is right outside the front door -- literally! Spend several hours wandering the market and sampling fresh foods and juices, and when you are tired of that go two blocks and walk the waterfront.

Staff helpful. And the cafe just off the lobby has the best latte I have ever had.

Hello from San Diego! So glad you had a chance to stay with us, especially during a Saturday when you can experience the farmers market. It's one of our favorite times of the week! Sounds like you had a great time making the most of your awesome location - glad to hear it. Thanks for the complements on our design, we just had that done last year and it really opens up the room.

We appreciate your choosing us and hopefully we'll see you again soon!

I found La Pensione on one of the travel OTA websites, and thought it looked fun and funky, and was a good deal. The hotel has a GREAT location in San Diego's Little Italy. The cafe and pizza restaurant (definitely get a slice at NaPizza!) that share the building are both fantastic. The checkin process for La Pensione was a bit slow and tedious. However, my room was great. Very small room, but just perfect for one person. Loved the very nice bathroom. I do wish there was a coffee maker in the room, but the cafe downstairs was pretty reasonable. Overall I was really happy with my stay.

Hi, so glad you found us! I agree, my entire staff LOVES the pizza at NaPizza. In fact, we can never get enough of them. Good thing they're organic!

Sorry, if the check-in process appeared tedious and slow. There are several steps to checking in a guest and I know my staff tries their best to move it along as quickly as possible. However, there is always room for improvement, so I'll see what my staff can do to make it smoother and faster for our guests.

Plus, if you ever want to return with a friend or family, we have larger, spacious double-queen rooms available. If you book directly with us, you can request these rooms when you are making a reservation.

Glad you were happy with your stay and we hope to see you again soon!

La Pensione is a very cute hotel with the ambiance of a small Italian villa tucked away somewhere in the outskirts of Italy, with a quaint little quartyard to enjoy a pleasant cup of cappuccino from a small coffee shop conveniently located and accessible from the same quartyard. The Hotel room was small and very basic but had all the basic necessities, "My wife said it was cozy, romantic, clean and had character". The hotel is located in a very good location where you are walking distance to Little Italy , several small pubs, micro breweries and good restaurants you can also walk to the USS Midway Museum a big Naval Aircraft Carrier Ship . The only complaining I can do with regards to my stay was the parking , we unfortunately arrived late an the hotel parking was full leaving no other choice but to park on the street directly in front of the hotel which doesn’t sound bad until you note that most all parking in the city San Diego takes quarters. This was not the icing on the cake, I was also informed that Saturday Morning they hold a farmer’s market directly in front of the hotel on Date Street and the vehicles need to be moved very early in the morning like 4:00AM or risk the chance of towing. I moved it and parked on Kettner Blvd.
This place was affordable and pleasantly located where I wonted to be, so you make the call. Would I stay again? “YES”.

Hello, thanks for your and your wife's kind and creative descriptions, and your recommendation to stay with us! Sounds like you had a fun time really enjoying Little Italy and taking advantage of being so close to San Diego Bay.

I especially appreciate your patience and flexibility with our parking situation. Finding a solution to the parking issue is our #1 priority, as we know it is important, and of course, convenient, to be able to park onsite without issue.

Thanks for your feedback and we hope you and your wife will be back in Little Italy soon!

Stayed here for 3 nights over in August 2013. We checked in late and ended up with a pretty tiny room on the first floor. I don't know if they are all that small, but this one certainly was tiny. Not a big deal to me, but my partner wasn't into it. So we had them upgrade us to a 2nd floor room the next night. It was spacious, clean, modern, and the location can't be beat.

Right in the heart of little Italy. It gets pretty sleepy in this area during the week at night. But that's true of a lot of San Diego. I would definitely stay here again, though I can see their prices going up, in which case I'd probably opt for somewhere else. I believe we paid $120-$130 for a night.

Room Tip: The bottom floor rooms face a dark alley. The one we stayed in was small, I can only assume the oth...

Hello! Thanks for taking the time to review your August visit. We appreciate your remembering to do so. So happy that we were able to upgrade you to our larger room types. We're one of the best values in San Diego, and consistently with room rates that are competitive (and truthfully, most of the times even better) than other downtown properties.

We love this part of downtown because it's lively when it should be, but winds down when people want to get their sleep. The other livelier part of downtown is in the Gaslamp Quarter, and the party goes on there until about 2am. Thanks again for your feedback and we hope you can visit us again.
