We're lighthouse lovers and came here mainly for that purpose. It was great, and there is so much more!
The view of the city and harbor area is magnificent, and we even saw the boat "Star of India" out for a sail--a special treat! And to top off the visit, the Cabrillo National Monument is up there as well. A great couple of hours up on Point Loma, and we even got to see a fog roll in over the ocean and into the harbor!

We loved the views of the city and Naval base. We saw several ships and a submarine cruising in the harbor. The lighthouse is free and has a small museum. Then we drove down to the ocean and looked at the tide pools while the tide was out.

beach looked clean, but it was overcast and very windy even for july (the mist from the sea comes down on in July). Nothing special and parking was a pain even though it was quiet.

Point Loma is the headquarters of the Portuguese colony in San Diego. There is even a street named Avenida de Portugal! Be sure to visit the pretty red-tiled roofed houses in La Playa at the end of the Point. Elegance to say the least! And don't forget Saint Agnes Church, with the statue of the Virgin Mary to the left of the altar, dressed in flowing blue robes and holding a tuna boat in her outstretched arm, a symbol to protect the all of the Portuguese tuna fishermen when they were out to sea. San Diego history!

From the moment you enter the park, history abounds. The Old Point Loma lighthouse stands guard high on a promontory to the west while the new Coast Guard Lighthouse sits lower near the tide pools. The history of the Old Lighthouse is an unusual one, not to be spoiled by this reviewer. The views are spectacular in every direction. The Cabrillo monument is here with its vast commanding view of San Diego harbor and Coronado. The Wold War II gun emplacements and spotter bunkers tell a history of their own, and a spotter and communication center is open to the public for viewing.

A complete educational center with videos and movies as well as a bookstore is here. Sufficient restrooms are also available. History lessons learned here will not soon be forgotten. Bring a light jacket as it can be windy, even in summer.
