What a great friendly place this is. I had issues buying a motorbike when in San Diego and ended up staying here for over a month. There's jobs going to pay the board if you're staying a while. That said, when I was there it was still only $17!

A mere 5 min walk from the beach to try out those surf boards you can hire, or play a bit of touch football. So easy to meet new people. I want to go back!

This was an excellent hostel. Excellent location approx 1 minute walk to the beach. Good night life in this area bit there really are only 3 or 4 pubs, no clubs its mainly beach parties and sneaky drinking in the hostel after hours.
The staff are really helpful and tijuana is only a short bus ride away. Wednesdays during the summer in TJ is Irish night and you can only get into certain clubs with an Irish passport so be careful if you are going down there without an Irish passport.
My friends and I loved San Diego and Ocean Beach so much that we ended up staying for 10 nights instead of our planned 4.
I would definitely recommend this hostel. You will come away from your trip in great humour and have many stories to tell.

Everything was just perfect there... it is an awesome hostel. The space and the location are great, but the better thing was the staff... they were ALL so kind, nice people always ready to help. Organized and clean, so I do recommend it!

i have just returned home to england after travelling the world for a year.my final destination was san diego ocean beach and i was recommended this hostel in particular, so i went.it was by far my favourite hostel i had stayed in.it was none stop fun from the moment i arrived to the time i had to leave! i stayed one week, joining in with the free bbq's, breakfasts, bar crawls, mexico trips, bon fires and was very sad to leave.so sad that i returned a week later and stayed another 10 days.

Ocean Beach in general is a very relaxed and happy place to stay.

i wanna say a massive thank you to the staff who pretty much made it for me! that element in a hostel is important to someone travelling on their own...and i was never on my own! i have done nothing but dream about wanting to go back since i left.they are always happy and willing to help.make sure you all go and visit this crazy hostel and dance on the porch, join in with beer pong, or just laze on the beach watching the surf.once again thank you, you cheeky monkeys! i WILL back!!

Dirty rooms, dirty kitchen and dirty bathrooms.
Not all independent hostels are dumps, but this one is. Perhaps some BB hostels are OK, but not OB and Mission Beach. Too bad there isn't another hostel near the beach in OB to give it competition. The closest other hostel, HI "Point Loma" (actually just as far from OB as Point Loma) is miles better: It's clean, professional, and doesn't dislike American citizens to the point of forbidding their entry like BB does.

The Good: Free and easy to organise pick up made it easy to get to the hostel after a long flight. The free breakfast was awesome, worth getting outta bed early for. Free evening meals twice a week was brilliant, too. Great beach holiday atmosphere. Location is great, 5mins near the beach. Surfboards and bikes for rent was a good idea (although they were $10 to rent out, kinda pricey for a student like me).

The bad: Some staff were the rudest I have ever met, I think they forgot we were actually paying to stay there (not all though, the ladies at the reception were awesome). THERE WERE WAY TOO MANY RULES. It was really kill-joy. Like having to put all your stuff in this gross dirty black tray and then having to put it on the bed where you sleep when the rooms were being cleaned.

The Ugly: sand, hair (not your own) and unidentifiable stains on most of your linen. Kinda gross but not unexpected for a hostel. Lucky the weather was hot and I didn't have to use the blanket provided.

Firstly, and most importantly, the town of Ocean Beach is fantastic, make sure you stay here if you're visiting San Diego. It has a slightly hippy air, with its independent coffee shops, antique stores, a fantastic beach and some really fun bars.

However, give the Ocean Beach International Hostel a miss. The staff/owners don't really care about the guests, it's a shabby, run down place, relying on the fact that it's got a good location and doesn't have much nearby competition.

I was stuck in a top bunk that was right next to a window onto a corridor that had a light shining through it all night with no way to turn it off or any curtain to close. The door had a major squeak, meaning that whenever people came in and out, you were woken up, plus the room was unbelievably hot, particularly the top bunk, since it was higher than the ceiling fan, meaning no air circulation.

The result? No sleep at all, due to factors that would be fairly easy to remedy, if only the owners gave a damn. Only book here if you see "Under New Management" on their website...
