Great Hostel! Location is perfect. You can basically step on the beach from the front door. I stayed there for 4 nights in January. Staff was friendly and breakfast is great.

The rooms are alright but don't expect anything fancy. Some of the lockers in my room seemed a little bit wrecked but nothing was stolen during my stay. Allover nice people and a very friendly/ layed back atmosphere. The area is great you got lots of little shops, bars and restaurant with a typical beach community feeling. In addition, some of S.D. greatest food places are just around the corner (Southbeach Grill, Hodads to name a few)

If'd come back to S.D. this is the place were I'd wanna stay!

+ Great Location
+ Friendly Staff
+ Breakfast
+ Free Locks
+Free Towels
+Cheap

-Bathrooms seem a bit dirty
-Beds are pretty worn out
-Only 2 chargers per room (though there is plenty outside)

We stayed here as a couple in April in a 4 bed dorm. The free breakfast was great, even being vegan. Think rolled oats, fruit, toast and pancakes (made by a friendly woman who works at the hostel, so everything is clean). I found the staff to be reserved but friendly. While there were a few odd people staying at the hostel, it wasn't anything off-putting, and you do need a passport or student card to stay there.

Overall the hostel is clean, just old and the dorm rooms were small but have curtains going across each bunk for privacy. If you can, try and avoid the bunk by the window in the room as a whole bunch of light gets in - or bring some tape and towels. The individual shower rooms off the hallway also contain the only toilets and even though there were signs up saying to avoid using the showers in the morning they weren't obeyed which made for some dancing on the spot. If you get really desperate there are free public (and clean toilets with soap) at the beach near the lifeguard building.

The location of the hostel is great for people who like the beach. Ocean Beach is just down the road and a great spot for surfing. There are cafes and bars all along the street and it's each to catch a bus into downtown. I felt safe staying in the area.

Food options for anyone who is vegetarian or vegan minded, within walking distance:
Ocean Beach Peoples Organic Food Market (stacks of vegan and vegetarian food upstairs and groceries downstairs), Ranchos Natural Foods (Mexican with many vegan options including dessert and an awesome pineapple sangria!) and OB Noodle House.

Room Tip: We stayed at the front of the hostel and noise wise it was normal for a hostel, most people were res...

This hostel scared me about the quality of hostels in the US, This may have been down to me and my friend not having much information about Ocean Beach to start with, but we were completely blind sided. Me and my friend stayed for 3 nights It was character building,

The hostel is situated in a large Art Deco building which has is in real need of some repair and updating.

The Staff can be hit or miss in terms of friendly and helpful, On Check in the price may get cheaper as they help cover the cost of transfers which was brilliant.

The dorms are clean but crampt with not enough room for 4 peoples luggage. I suggest not looking at the state of the bedding and if possible putting something between it and your self. All the mattresses are covered with a plastic sheet which isn't the nicest to sleep on, but necessary I guess. You must put your bag on your bed everyday which is slightly inconvenient more so if on the top bunk and there are not enough plugs in the rooms. Our dorm did have an on suite shower room which was clean enough

We didn't use the kitchen although it looked clean enough just, This space is very intimidating and dominated by 2 fixed seating what can only be described and municipal park tables.
The free breakfast is alright i didn't venture much past the toast.

The location for amenities is good with beach, bars and restaurants all close to hand, although it is still quite aways on public transport from the centre of San Deigo. Ocean Beach is a Rough and Ready sort of place though, It has a high number of Homeless and can appear quite daunting, or it was for us. There are a number of nice bars and restaurants in the area and its perhaps a more realistic view on San Diego than your average tourist receives.

Overall this Hostel was a very interesting experience, and its a bed for the night. We were lucky we ended up being on our own in our dorm 2 out of the 3 nights.

Pretty average hostel. Location was brilliant, stones throw from the beach and great restaurants and bars close by, free breakfast was lovely. Eat as much as you want and pretty tasty.

No hot water whilst we were there which wasn't ideal but as we were only there for 2 nights we made do. The outdoor space out back was a bit gross, could do with a tidy. Wifi was dodgy. We parked a few blocks down for free, just have to watch for when they're street cleaning.

Small rooms but curtains on beds for privacy which was good. Lockers available, just a returnable lock deposit required, free towels, and free meals on some nights.

Kids having sex in dorm rooms while others are trying to sleep. Also people dont care about the quite time and are for example talking in the phone during the night in dorm rooms. And they dont even care if you say about it. Only good things are the lovation and the fact that there is breakfast even though it is pretty crappy.

Arrived early, girl at counter said room would he ready at 2pm, come back then. At 2.10pm boy at counter truffle said check in is at 3pm, he didn't even look up from computer. I explained what the girl said, he said 'don't care check in at 3'. Later at check in same guy obviously hadn't a clue, read from a sheet, forgot to give us sheets etc. Rooms extremely small and hot! Bunkers are two single beds glued one on top of another!! You MUST vacate room everyday from 11am to 3pm which is a disgrace, you pay for room and cant use it!! One day we even had to take all our stuff out of room for these four hours and store it outside, on a shelf, no lockers, no security!! Breakfast was decent but very early, finished at 9am then kitchen closed for an hour. Kitchen and rooms off limits for many hours for cleaning, but weren't very clean afterwards!! Two showers per floor for entire hostel also, disgusting! Everything gets locked up at 11pm, either get out or go to bed at that time. When someone asked staff what can she do in locality, he said beach, that's it. This is true, there is anything else bar getting bus elsewhere. This was annoying when it wasn't beach weather. Also, my sister and I were blamed for sand in the patio area, we protested our innocence, we weren't even at the beach that day but weren't believed. When checking out, staff were chatting at counter and made is wait. They were actually gossiping and complaint about a guest who had just checked out. We happened to have shared a room with her, nice lady. They were calling her awful things and in front of us too!! Overall, not the cleanest, more bathrooms required, silly being made evacuate rooms each day and staff need an attitude overhaul. Think again before booking.
