“Great option for downtown San Diego”
Reviewed March 27, 2013 via mobile

The staff of this Kimpton really made my stay special. Everyone is welcoming and thanked me for choosing their hotel. Free coffee in the morning and free wine happy hour in the lobby was a nice touch. Saltbox lounge is one of the best hotel bars I've ever experienced....amazing food and interesting cocktails. Location of the hotel was fine, right at the start of the gaslamp district on 5th but there is some road construction going on right now so things can be noisy at times. The rooms are a good size but I felt like the floors weren't 100% clean...just a few dust bunnies around. Bed and linens were amazing and animal print robes were a fun touch. Overall I'd definitely stay here again. Didnt get to experience the pool but looks fun and they do parties out there on the weekends.Wish I could be here for the pig roast April 6th!

Stayed a few days, this was our first time in SD.
We were excited to try a Kimpton hotel.
Staff was friendly and helpful; we didn't have to wait very long for valet. Guests seemed to enjoy the free wine at happy hour and free coffee in the mornings.
We were told we had been ''upgraded'' but our room was small, darkish, cramped with cheap modern decor and low amenities. (Ex: the safe was almost unreachable on the floor and there were no slippers with the robes). Can't imagine what the other room would have been like. Luckily we didn't have to spend much time in our room.
We waited a long time for housekeeping to deliver 1 glass (if 2 ppl are staying in a room, why they would only provide 1 wine glass and not 2.....) and another day we had to call twice to inquire about ice. As it is always the little things which make the difference, this is really a 3.5 stars hotel.
Location was good for what we needed, not to noisy, with a pharmacy and Starbucks close by and lots of restaurants all walking distance.
Wouldn't go back and would most likely stay in LaJolla next time.

I am sorry you didn't have a great stay with us Globetrotter_411. The delay in getting things to your room that should have already been there is disappointing.

I would like to discuss your stay with you. My email is mark.vancooney@hotelpalomar.com.

Booked the hotel through an agent based on three adults sharing the room. On arrival the hotel had provided a single double bed for three guys. Despite all paperwork, vouchers and the hotel system listed as three male adults as staying. We were offered another room this time with two small doubles... But at a further charge of $30. On having seen the room set up this just wasn't acceptable. We returned to reception to complain that we really shouldn't be charged an extra $30 when this wasn't our fault only to be cut mid sentence trying to explain what had happened by the receptionist taking a call. No apology was made when the call ended either, plain rudeness. They then proceeded to say that we would still have to pay the fee and that they wouldn't take responsibility and that it was the agents fault. It may well be but customer service wouldn't have gone a miss and maybe they could gave wavered the fee on this occasion. They didn't. On calling the agent things were sorted by the agent and no fee was taken. Still I ended up sleeping on the floor there just wasn't room. Hugely disappointed from the first moment we stepped into the hotel. The pool bar is under construction so don't expect drinks by the pool either. Our shower also failed and we had no water in the room in the morning. Shambles!

Room Tip: Pick another hotel.

Booked room on hotwire only to get here and realize that the savings we made went directly to the $38 per day for valet so watch out for that. Also there are no ice machines. Expect to tip the staff for every request. Also don't expect to wake up and make a coffee or tea for yourself because there is no coffee maker in the room. We had a king bed but the room is so small. I think our bathroom was about the same size. Currently there is lots of construction outside of the hotel and the area is a bit sketchy. If you do decide to stay at this hotel, ask the staff to give you a room away from housekeeping. They put us right out front of housekeeping and you can hear them coming and going all day and all night. Walls are very thin.

Sorry you had a rough stay Mark. Parking in San Diego is limited and we are priced near the rest of the hotels in the area.

I would like to chat about your stay when it is convenient.

This was our first stay at a Kimpton hotel, but it will certainly not be our last! Everything about this hotel was perfect (except maybe the restaurant). Anything you could possibly want is walking distance, probably less than two blocks away. The staff is cool, friendly, and helpful. The room we booked (king suite) was amazing. Having two bathrooms is nice, even for just two people, and the bed was so comfortable we didn't want to get out of it. The big surprise was the HUGE balcony overlooking the pool and the city. We ate a few take-out meals on that balcony, enjoying the sights and sounds of the city. When we booked there was a reduced rate for the amount of time we were spending there, so it was a bargain, too. Street noise could be an issue to some, but we embraced it as part of the city experience and quickly got used to it. The hotel will supply you with ear plugs upon request. I suppose the higher level floors would be quieter, too (we were on 9th out of 22). We had one lunch at Salt Rock, in the downstairs lounge and it was disappointing, but with so many dining choices in Gaslamp, who cares? We will definitely stay here any time we're in San Diego.

Room Tip: The suites have huge balconies and two bathrooms. Higher level floors may be quieter.

On the whole the hotel was pretty good. Breakfast was always cooked well, served well, but strangely even though I had the same thing every morning (S/S Pancakes, side of Bacon, Coffee and OJ) the price was different every time. My room was fine, the bar was good, staff were all terrific, my only complaint, the noise outside the hotel. Not just the digging up of the road, there seemed to be a constant stream of motorbikes revving their engines, or cars doing much the same, even at 3 o'clock in the morning. I concur with the others who "said ask for a higher floor" - I was on Floor six and the noise was not good. My room did not have a tub, which I would have preferred, but I may have got one if I had asked, I am not sure. All in all, a good place to spend a few days to explore San Diego, a walk two blocks down and you are in the Gaslamp district, food and drink in abundance.

Room Tip: High Floor, High Floor, High Floor! Did I mention High Floor?

Sorry about all of the noise from the street DuncarinUSA. The nice thing is the work is sprucing up the neighborhood. Bad thing is the noise. But it's wrapping up and most of the loud noise is done!

Come back please and experience a quiet Gaslamp! (at least the construction)

The hotel staff is very friendly and the wine hour is quite nice. The pool is closed and ordering food or drinks poolside was not received vey happy by the staff. OMG, the 7am drilling of the street was horrible...EVERY day! I like that the hotel is animal friendly. :) Ohhhhh, our room was very dirty upon arrival. They did do a touch up when we complained and were at dinner. The noise is really horrible here, whether you are in your room or by the pool. Oh, and why is the pool bar/food not open? The walls are paper thin, but the staff did respond to a couple of calls regarding noise next door. Since the hotel was at light occupancy and knowing the walls are so thin, there is no reason to place two vacationers next to each other. I was not happy overall, but it is what it is.

Room Tip: Stay off the main street and make sure there is no construction scheduled,
