The Beach Cottage were a great find. What a reasonable price for ocean front. We have used tripadvisor many times and haven't been disappointed yet. The combination cottages and 3 floor motel is right on the beach and a small walk to the pier. We stayed in the west wing and had a nice view of the pier. The hotel rooms are very large and have balconies over looking the ocean. They have a fridge and mircowave area, which was great for having a quick breakfast in the room before heading out. The hotel is quite old but very well maintained and clean. We stayed here for three nights April 11, 12, 13. If I were staying longer the cottages would be a nice choice. The restuarant right in front of the hotel on the beach was great we ate a few meals there. Theres also a big grocery store Ralphs just up the block. We rented bikes on the beach, its a great way to see the area. Pacific Beach is just minutes from downtown San Diego, and all the other attractions. I should be so lucky to be able to stay here again, heres hoping to get to San Diego again someday.

I recently stayed at the Beach Cottages with three of my friends on the final leg of our trip to Southern CA. We stayed for three nights.

The four of us shared an apartment with two queen beds and a kitchen for $135/night (winter rate). The room was very large, and included a sitting area with a couch, chair, and coffee table near the TV and a large dining table with 6 chairs, if I recall correctly. The kitchen was well-equipped with silverware, pots and pans, baking dishes, cups, plates, bowls, etc. There were two queen beds and a decent-sized, clean bathroom. All of the furniture was new-looking and well-kept.

The studio apartments (where we stayed) and motel rooms are in the North Building, set apart from the main building where the bigger apartments and cottages are located. The apartments/motel rooms in the North building do not have a view of the ocean, but the rooms in the main building do. Although we didn't have a view of the ocean, this didn't bother us. We could still smell and hear the ocean from our room, and from our room we were only a few steps from the beach.

The hotel's location was nice- lots to do in the area without having to drive. The hotel is a quick walk from the boardwalk and pier, lots of bars, shops, and restaurants. Ralph's (grocery store) is right across the street. In the area you can rent bikes, rollerblades, boogie boards, etc. for the day. The area felt relatively safe, though it did seem more of a place for college-aged adults and older than a place for small children and families. I think maybe Mission Beach is more of a family-oriented place... that's just the impression I got.

The hotel staff was helpful. When our toilet got clogged, the desk staff sent a maintainence person right away. The room was cleaned each day, and they were happy to give us extra towels.

Overall, the Beach Cottages exceeded my expectations as a beachfront motel. I'd definitely return, maybe for longer next time!

If you want to stay where the action is and be right on the beach, the beach cottages are 100% perfect. My family stays at least once a year. We are in are 30's with 3 kids ages 15, 13 & 9. We usually take a room in the north apartment because of the price and the view. The apartment rooms are great for a good size family who is on a budget. There is a small kitchen in each room. We very rarely used it, but it was very nice to have. It's stocked with everything you need to make a decent meal if you want to eat in. While on vacation I do not cook, so there are tons of restaurants within walking distance. This is such a great place if you like to people watch. Lots and lots of people. The down side of this place is the bar on the corner. We love to go and have a couple of drinks, but if you are not a partier and go to bed at a decent time, you may be awaken by young kids leaving the bar after 1am. This was not a big deal for us, but someone else may not like it. I will not stay anywhere else when we are in San Diego. If you really want to experience the beach lifestyle, this is the place. If you are looking for 4 or 5 star places this would not be it. The decor is outdated, there is no pool but everything is clean and probably the one of the most affordable places to stay in Pacific Beach!!!! Definately a Must!!!

We stayed in Cottage 519, one of the few two bedroom cottages that is suitable for two couples. Cost was $230 US/night for four people, very reasonable in San Diego. Our two runners just loved the proximity to the clean beach and grassy park for their long morning runs. The two walkers were also happy with the area although we left it every afternoon for other hiking destinations, shopping, or tours.

We all loved the many choices of places to eat near by (ex. The Mission for breakfast) or a ten minute drive away (ex Hash-a-Go-Go for great breakfasts).

Our cottage was simple, clean, and airy. Our first impression of the area was that it was crazy and we wanted to leave the next day. Turns out that day was the best weekend beach day of their spring break. It calmed down after that and by the end of our time there, we were wishing we could stay one more night. Make your reservations well ahead if you want a two bedroom cottage.

We'd go back to San Diego happily and we'd recommend this place to you as long as you don't want posh.

First of all the best feature of staying at The Beach Cottages was the location and the fact that we were RIGHT AT THE BEACH! Every day we only had to walk down a couple of flights of stairs (outside so we could see and hear the ocean beckoning us!) and up a short walkway and voila! we were at the beach. It seemed to be a very safe location. The parking was free and somewhat secured from the general public.

Now the not so best features....cleanliness. When my daughter crawled into bed upon arrival (being ill) she found an over the counter pill in the sheets! Overlooking this, it appeared that our room had not had a real cleaning in several visits. The mattress had stains on the sides which were visible when the quilt was pulled back.

However...........the fact that we were on the beach overshadowed the negatives and we were able to enjoy our stay. We would stay there again.

After having stayed in four accomodations in the San Diego & Los Angeles areas in March of 2005, I must say that this establishment was the most cozy, comfortable, scenic and practical one. My modest 3rd floor room had a rate of $75 per night.
The mini-kitchen area was clean & modern with provided dishes, coffee cups, microwave, mini-fridge, coffeemaker & dishsoap. The bathroom vanity area is the shared sink area to the kitchen. The attached shower + lavatory area is separated by a door. The ocean view from the 3rd-story room's sliding glass door & balcony was amazing, and the staff was very courteous. Beach Cottages is located within walking distance of grocery, drugstore, entertainment, restaurants, etc, and is RIGHT ON THE BEACH. The decor reminded me of 1978 or so, but was in excellent condition and spotlessly clean. I also found it charming that there was readily available outdoor ping-pong onsight & hotel guests who consistently played.
Note to those with leg/mobility problems: The hotel does have a properly working elevator even though it only has 3 floors.
If you're looking for a good value and some nice scenery, this is a wonderful place to stay. It's clean, attractive & friendly.
If you're looking for a chic sleek high-rise with super-modern decor and status-oriented clientele, the Beach Cottages may not be your cup of tea.

I had a completely different experience at the Beach Cottages. It looks like a good place for families if you can get one of the beachfront cottages, however my boyfriend and I stayed in the building that looked over a parking lot. When we arrived there were a bunch of frat boys yelling at each other on their balcony, getting drunk. No big deal except this lasted for most of the afternoon and night. The staff wasn't overly nice, the room was pretty depressing and we had someone from the staff walk into our room twice without knocking. We're both laid back people so it wasn't that big of a deal but I was really disappointed after reading all of the good reviews and having a totally different experience. Since I often check this site before travelling I wouldn't want someone else to end up in my position.
