Can not be beat for its location (right on the beach), rates are very reasonable, clean, and attentiive staff. Have stayed here twice in the last 3 years and will stay again.

The view of the Pacific Ocean when you walk out your front door is the best thing about The Beach Cottages. I had a room on the third floor of the main building and was very pleased with my stay. The room was not large but the bed was comfortable and the housekeeper did a good job of cleaning and was very nice about checking to see if it was convenient for her to clean. It was very quiet in my room but I would be concerned about the north building as it overlooks some bars and noise might be a problem.

There was a "kitchen area" with a refrigerator, micowave, coffee pot and sink and then a separate room with shower and toliet. It is an older property but everything was clean and well maintained. There was no air conditioning which was fine while I was there but might be a concern during warmer weather. You can open the window across the front (with screen) but you can't leave it open when you are not there or possibly at night as anyone could walk in.

The front desk people were friendly and helpful and there are lots of eating places in easy walking distance. You have to try Kono's at the end of Garnet at the pier for breakfast (huge portions). I'll definitely be back to The Beach Cottages!

Worked in San Diego and wanted to stay by the beach versus the sterile Marriott/Hilton properties I normally stay in. This place was right on the beach! A little dated, nothing special about the inside of the rooms, but who needs that when you have a balcony looking out to the ocean and beach. Internet wasn't reliable, it went down every now and then. TVs were small. The place was undergoing some renovation, so it is probably a little nicer now then when we stayed. I think they were putting in hardwood kitchen floors and changing out all of the doors (still had actual keys) and carpets. Be prepared to adhere to quiet hours if you stay there. They really inforce a no talking at night policy. Off-street included parking was key.

We stayed at the Beach Cottages on Oct of 2007 past the busy season. The Cottages have several wings and we stayed in the West Wing facing the street. We had a balcony with a partial ocean view which was nice.

But every night until about 1am there were drunken colleege kids and surfers walking up and down the street screaming at the top of their lungs. Then at 7 in the morning the trucks that would smooth out the beach drove by. And shortly thereafter the delivery trucks would show up. So it was hard to get a good night's sleep. We slept with earplugs. Taking a nap during the days was also hard since it was never quiet. Unfortunately there were no rooms available that faced the inside.

However the location next to the beach was excellent. There was a Ralphs very close by and there were barbecue pits on the property which made it possible to have some excellent meals without breaking the bank.

So if you do go there get either a cottage, a 1 bedroom in the main building, or a room in the west wing facing south. Avoid the north building and the rooms in the west wing facing the street.

The Beach Cottages are AWESOME. I didn't stay in one of the cottages, but in a room on the third floor of the main building. We had a balcony with a beautiful view. It was spotlessly clean. I figured being right on the beach it would have a sandy, grimy feel, but it didn't. The cleaners even sweep and mop the sand off of the sidewalks. Our room had a sliding glass door that we could open and look right at the ocean from the comfort of the bed. It was awesome. The hotel is completely fenced in, with doors that open right to the beach. It's a great place for kids, with ping-pong and shuffle board and they can play on the property. It's within walking distance of many restaurants and shops.

Stayed over the Labor day weekend. I knew they didn't have air conditioning in the rooms but I thought they would of worked out a way to venelate the rooms better. They did supply the room with a plug-in fan but the rooms get very hot when the doors are all closed. They don't have a patio security screen door so you can't leave your patio door open and feel secure. The hallway was cooler than my room, maybe they should install venelation windows above the room entry doors (old school).

I might stay here in the cooler months but doubt if I would stay here during the hot months again.

We have been staying here on and off for many years and can attest that it is the best place to stay in this area without breaking the bank.

If you want to watch people, play on the beach, relax, play in the surf...well, this location can't be beat. The rooms are mostly clean and in good order, though I have seen some that were in serious need of upgrades -- especially in the main building. The furnshings are basic and have in the past been somewhat in need of repair, though this past February the room we got was fine. Our room came with a small but serviceable balcony. The bathroom was small but funtional (and very dated). The bed is OK, the linens OK. The building inside and out seems to be in decent repair.

Parking is free. The location for downtown and other touristy S.D. attractions is just OK. If you're going to do those things it is probably best to have your own car. Nearby are numerous restaurants, most of which are poor to just OK.

The staff is efficient if a little on the unprofessional and unhelpful side. But maybe that's the lazy beach town mentality creeping in.
