“Great Location!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 26, 2014

We escaped to San Diego to watch the Mariners unfortunately get whipped, not once but twice by the Padres. Aside from the defeats, our trip was loads of fun. And the Gaslamp Plaza Suites let us stay right in the middle of the action.

Once we parked our car (valet $30/day) we forgot about it. We easily walked to Petco park to watch the ballgames (if you stop into the Omni Hotel for a happy hour drink and get your tickets validated you can use the hotel's skybridge into the park!). There are countless restaurants to try and the mall is less than two blocks away. You are paying for location - and the value is there.

The suite was very nice, if not a little fussy for my taste. It had a sitting room with fold-out couch, bedroom and over-sized bathroom with tub. I've slept in better beds - our twin was a little firm and we were happy to find a third pillow in the closet. Despite being double-paned, the windows let in A LOT of sound - and Wednesday and Thursday night in the Gaslamp District sounds like Saturday night with lots of music and patron noise. If you're a light sleeper - bring earplugs.

Added bonus is the roof-top deck. Bring a bottle of wine & some appies upstairs and sit under an umbrella enjoying lovely downtown views (closes at 11PM). The staff is incredibly friendly and quick to offer suggestions for food, libations or entertainment. A continental breakfast is offered, but is very limited. Have a light snack and head out for much better food mere blocks away (i.e. Brian's 24). This is a great place to stay if you want to explore downtown San Diego!

My boyfriend and I stayed here early June for 3 nights. We booked the mini room, it wasn't available in any of the UK booking sites so I booked directly with the hotel. It was cheaper and I really wanted to stay here so it was the ideal solution. The mini suite was perfect, yes it was small, you could walk around the bed (unlike some of the reviews) we had a fridge, microwave, coffee making facilities, safe, iron and ironing board and so much more than we expected. The view was of a brick alley but we could see the best views from breakfast so who cared. Wifi was quite pricey at $12 a day.

The breakfast is small. Its adequate, pastries. toast, cereals and plenty of juice. The view was breathtaking, a real boost to start your day. Lots of seats and no noise whatsoever. The receptionist said you're welcome to spend time there till 11pm when the doors are locked. We went up some nights to see the city in the dark.

The location is brilliant, all the public transport you could need and being in the gaslamp quarter you have such a variety of restaurants. We never heard the outside world from our room, maybe because our room wasn't facing the street. Horton plaza is next door which was perfect for some fridge items and quick lunches.

The hotel was ideal and wouldn't hesitate to return or recommend to others. I have to add if you meet Merry on reception whatever she suggests do it! She has great advice and is incredibly enthusiastic about the city, a real character who brightened up our day.

If you are visiting San Diego without a car, this is a great place to stay. Although it can be a bit noisy on the weekend, the location great and so is the staff. The hotel rooms are small. The suites are nice.

It's a lovely old bldg situated in the heart of the lively gas lamp quarters, getting around is really easy (walking / cabs / trolley / bus).. merry at the front desk was super.. friendly, informative and very helpful.. rooms were nice.. took a 1bed suite.. bedroom was slightly small but a seperate living area made up for it.. suite 309 had an amazing view of the buzzing street.. daily housekeeping, small kitchenette, good hot shower, made for a comfortable stay.. breakfast was very ordinary.. but the view was good.. lovely property to stay if u like the action on the street..

Dear Guest,
Thank you for your review. We always appreciate our guests feed back and strive to maintain top quality in all our units. We renovated our rooms in two different phases. Lower floors are decorated with a blue interior and the upper floors in black/gold interior. I am happy you had a good time here in San Diego. We hope to see you back soon again.

Reading other reviews' mention of "restored rooms" I see that maybe only certain suites are as dated as mine. My suite was in no way dilapidated or crummy, but it could certainly use some spiffing up. The rooftop breakfast is awesome, as is the central location for all-things Gaslamp.

Room Tip: The area's noisy, so if that keeps you from a restful sleep then ask for a room on a higher floo...

The rooms are completely restored and very nice but a bit small for some people. Keep in mind that it is hard to make rooms bigger in buildings over 100 years old.

On the other hand the friendly staff, things to see talk, complementary rooftop breakfast and hotel location more than make up for the room size. Your room key card is needed to operate the elevator for increased security. The central AC is nice and quiet.

The hotel is in the middle of the gaslamp area that is full of good restaurants, and shops yet still walking distance to the harbour or baseball park. The gaslamp area has a lot of late night partiers so you may want to ask for a higher floor to limit the city noise.

The airport is a short cab ride but for $2.50 you can take a bus.

Room Tip: Gaslamp area is party central so try to get a high floor to limit street noise.

I travel a lot and I hate doing the typical 20-year old thing which is having 6 people to a room. Well we had 6 people in a room for a bachelorette weekend and I can truly say it was comfortable. The rooms have so much space. Continental breakfast is a overstatement for breakfast, but it still gets you ready for the day. Parking is $30 a night, however if your goal is to stay in the Gaslamp district it's worth it since walking everywhere is very easy. There's a mall just east of walking out of the hotels entrance, very convenient. If I go back down to San Diego this summer I will most certainly be staying here.
