“Stay in gas lamp area of San diego”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

Older hotel, used to be a bank decades and decades ago. Rooms are unique ...some noise from the street but expected that. Rooms were clean. Service was okay ... No complaints. We walked around a lot in the area ..I was surprised by the homeless people...there are a lot. My first time to San Diego so I'm not sure if numbers are the norm, or if it's because of the economy...

For us the best part of the hotel was definitely the location, right in the buzzing downtown. also loved the lobby, reminded me of the disney "hollywood tower hotel" with the elevators. the breakfast was ok, the best part is the view for sure. the hotel itself is quite european style, a very unique hallway set up and the room (we stayed in the mini suite) was very big with a very comfy bed. we went to the restaurant downstairs, which we really enjoyed! everything was clean, but could do with a few renovations, but in saying that it's obvious they do make touch ups every so often. and the all the guys who helped us out around the hotel were lovely. the stay wasnt cheap, but it was the weekend and we had a good time.

Room Tip: mini suites were quite large and liked their set up

The hotel is stylish and good in location. Just blocks around you can take either buses or trolleys to tour around San Diego. There are a lot of pubs and nice restaurant around which you easily find a place for a good meal. I have stayed here for 4 days. The room was huge for a solo traveler. It's clean and nicely maintained. The bed was comfortable and I have 4 good night sleep. But it will be perfect if the hotel offers free wifi instead of charging for it. The breakfast at the rooftop was nice. The view was spectacular. But one minor point for staying at the lower floor. I have my room at the 2nd floor. With the pubs around, there were people chatting and laughing until around midnight and at the 2nd floor, I heard those quite clear and have to bear with these noise.

Nice historic hotel. I HIGHLY suggest the mini suite which is what I had. Beautiful room, VERY comfortable bed. I had one on the 6th floor that had a great veiw of the city, looked right over the Gaslamp districy and the baseball stadium. The rooftop deck if beautiful, don't miss free continental breakfast up there.

As everyone says, it's noisy at night. If you're a heavy sleeper, no wories then. I'm a light sleeper so I did hear it. Luckily I didn't have anything else to do the next day so I figured, what the heck, join the fun! :)

In the end... beautiful historic hotel with great service right in the middle of the action.

Room Tip: Choose a mini suite as high up as you can get, I'm guessing higher = quieter

We wanted for nothing in this hotel. We were greeted and made to feel welcome immediately. Merry was especially helpful and friendly and loved that we were from England! The room was really cute, with a huge bathroom and a wall full of mirrors which was great for getting ready of evening. The location of the hotel was right in the heart of Gaslamp Quarter which was great at night for bars and gorgeous choice of restaurants, and saved a fortune in taxi fairs. Just a short walk from Little Italy and also the Marina. A great shopping centre just across the road too. The breakfast was a tad disappointing so we gave this a miss, but not a problem.
I would recommend this hotel to everybody, and would definately return. Thanks for a great stay at the Gaslamp!!

This is an older style hotel. The good points is a location close to the restaurants, to public transport and a front desk that was really helpful, and importantly was able to give good tips on where to go and when. The down side was the rooms. We were initially put in room 1008 then 908. This is at one end of the building directly under the cooling plant. The plant produced a loud humming sound which would drive someone to despair. We ended up lower down which was ok. We were also surprised at the number of homeless people in this area. This took the shine off the restaurants. The ones we went to were great with the best value for money being Los Panchos across the road. This was our 1st Mexican restaurant and the food and drink was both excellent and really well priced. Overall loved San Diego and the people we met

Room Tip: If allocated an upper floor room ask to check it (for the chill plant noise)
