“the BEST margaritas in San Diego, no doubt”
Reviewed December 18, 2012

My wife and I feel like family here. From the bartenders to the wait staff and cooks, we are treated great. The margaritas are absolutely the best in San Diego. For tequila connoisseurs, this place is packed from floor to ceiling with great tequilas and mezcals. Their food is good and menu is not that extensive, but you come here to drink not to have a huge menu to choose from. The furniture could use some updating but damn those margaritas are great.

“Terrific Mexican food and tequila”
Reviewed February 22, 2012

This is a great little place with authentic food, must be 100 choices of tequila from which they can make awesome, authentic margaritas and a cool patio which is as big as the inside seating. A small, cozy and very authentic place.

“REAL margaritas”
Reviewed December 21, 2011

Don't drink in the Gaslamp, where you pay tourist prices for tourist-flavored drinks. Just a couple miles away in San Diego's REAL nightlife district, North Park, you can have your choice of dozens of tequilas in this friendly, beautiful little bar. Great outdoor patio too. The menu is limited but is good Mexican bar food with nightly specials. Mole night is HIGHLY recommended - dark and light mole served on chicken breasts. One is made in-house, the other is imported from Oaxaca. Even if you don't drink, you should head here for the mole.

“We enjoyed some tacos and a great assortment of tequilas!”
Reviewed December 3, 2011

Cantina Mayahuel is a cool spot for a good drink in University Heights. The décor is something out of a Revolutionary gathering during Mexico’s independence. The round solid wooden tables are heavy and thick with metal fasteners to compliment the heavy wooden stools surrounding the tables. I came here with a few friends and my girlfriend after watching a movie at the landmark in Hillcrest. We enjoyed some tacos and a great assortment of tequilas. There are loads of choice to drink and eat, so you should not be disappointed.

“Great Tequila, Eat Elsewhere”
Reviewed August 9, 2011

Cantina Mayahuel can have 4 or 5 stars for its selection of tequilas, but barely gets a three for food. The menu is incredibly limited and three times more expensive than it needs to be for food of a similar quality. This is not where you come for cheap eats.

There was nothing wrong with the taste of the food, but it was also not world beating. I might come back to drink, but that is it.
