Owner description: The Tony Award-winning Old Globe is one of the country’s leading professional regional theatres and has stood as San Diego’s flagship arts institution for over 80 years. Under the leadership of Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein, The Old Globe produces a year-round season of 15 productions of classic, contemporary, and new works on its three Balboa Park stages: the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the 600-seat Old Globe Theatre and the 250-seat Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, both part of The Old Globe’s Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, and the 605-seat outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, home of its internationally renowned Shakespeare Festival. More than 250,000 people attend Globe productions annually and participate in the theatre’s education and community programs. Numerous world premieres such as the 2014 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Bright Star, Allegiance, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and the annual holiday musical Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! have been developed at The Old Globe and have gone on to enjoy highly successful runs on Broadway and at regional theatres across the country.

“Intimate”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2013

This is an intimate theatre just like the one in Stratford that Shakespear put on his plays. It is closed in on the sides but there is no roof, so it is an outdoor theatre. The lighting and sound were both good. The only warning, if you sit in the front row, you may get spit on by the actors.

“Great Shakespeare”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2013

We traveled to San Diego to attend the summer Shakespeare festival. We saw 2 Shakespeare plays and 1 by Tom Stoppard. As always in our experience, the acting and staging were very good. We will return.

“Going round and round”

A kind of recreation of England's of Shakespeare theater which houses performances of things other than plays by the old bard.
Some productions are done in an outdoor theater next door which has stage elevators and lots of mechanical stage systems.
Take a sweater or wear a long sleeve shirt for outside performances. Evenings can be cool

“Go Back in Time Under The Moonlight”

Simply enjoyed the classic plays with the sky overhead. You will lose yourself in this venue. This is not for those needing instant thrills every second, but it is for those that appreciate the real and true classics and arts. I like to dress up for this venue, and sometimes even wear period costume on occasion, with friends. Please bring a sweater or jacket, as the night air can cool down quite a bit.

This was a wonderful performance of The Merchat Of Venice. The outdoor theater was perfect for a very warm September night.
