Owner description: The Tony Award-winning Old Globe is one of the country’s leading professional regional theatres and has stood as San Diego’s flagship arts institution for over 80 years. Under the leadership of Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein, The Old Globe produces a year-round season of 15 productions of classic, contemporary, and new works on its three Balboa Park stages: the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the 600-seat Old Globe Theatre and the 250-seat Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, both part of The Old Globe’s Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, and the 605-seat outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, home of its internationally renowned Shakespeare Festival. More than 250,000 people attend Globe productions annually and participate in the theatre’s education and community programs. Numerous world premieres such as the 2014 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Bright Star, Allegiance, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and the annual holiday musical Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! have been developed at The Old Globe and have gone on to enjoy highly successful runs on Broadway and at regional theatres across the country.

“Outdoor theater”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

We saw an excellent production of "Rosencrantz and Guidenstern are Dead" at the Summer Shakespeare Festival's outdoor theater. The seats were comfortable. Come prepared for a cool evening; the theater rents blankets if you need them.

“Best Acoustics, No "bad" seats!”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

Each theatre season presents a wide variety of excellent live performances in one of 3 different settings. The theatres are located in beautiful Balboa Park. The summer Shakespeare Festival is held in an outdoor setting. The rest of the season uses the two remaining theatres, which contain virtually no "bad" seats. The productions are always extremely professional, with wonderful sets, directors and actors with national reputations, and wonderful talent. If you enjoy live theatre, don't miss a chance to see a show at the Old Globe Theatre while in San Diego.

“Among the best you will ever see”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

I was so lucky to be able to see a performance of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead at the Old Globe. OK, I will admit that I have always liked Tom Stoppard's plays, but the excellent performances from the entire cast made it a really memorable event. A stunning tragicomical combination of humor and serious philosophy which was entirely engrossing.
If you are planning a visit to San Diego, I would absolutely suggest you try and find time to enjoy a performance at the Old Globe, no matter what is currently being performed.

“A touch of London in San Diego”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

The Old Globe I am told is a replica of the Old Globe during the time of Shakespear's London. There is a Shakespear festival at the venue as well as other stage plays. Also many pre Broadway plays are staged there before heading to New York. A tour of the Old Globe in Balboa Park is a must for anyone wishing to see the entertainment history of the Globe.
