Owner description: The Tony Award-winning Old Globe is one of the country’s leading professional regional theatres and has stood as San Diego’s flagship arts institution for over 80 years. Under the leadership of Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein, The Old Globe produces a year-round season of 15 productions of classic, contemporary, and new works on its three Balboa Park stages: the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the 600-seat Old Globe Theatre and the 250-seat Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, both part of The Old Globe’s Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, and the 605-seat outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, home of its internationally renowned Shakespeare Festival. More than 250,000 people attend Globe productions annually and participate in the theatre’s education and community programs. Numerous world premieres such as the 2014 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Bright Star, Allegiance, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and the annual holiday musical Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! have been developed at The Old Globe and have gone on to enjoy highly successful runs on Broadway and at regional theatres across the country.

“Excellent theater in Balboa Park”
Reviewed June 12, 2013

There are three theaters in the complex and during the summer, there is something playing nearly every night. The Shakespeare Festival's shows in the summer are outdoors and consistently good. The smallish theater in the round facility produces some of the most engaging productions, because of the intimacy. There are no bad seats in any of the venues.

Plan for a pre- or post- show snack or meal at the nearby Prado Restaurant. It's only steps away in the park and is a terrific place for a meal in the restaurant proper or something simpler in the bar.

“Wonderful theater complex”
Reviewed June 10, 2013

Wonderful theater complex. For a number of years, I've come to see Shakespeare's plays and loved Summer evening shows, particularly those around the Perseid meteor showers, in the middle of August.

“Special Evening in San Diego”
Reviewed June 5, 2013

Travelled to San Diego in May. Took in a play at the Old Globe theatre in Balboa Park. What a good decision. The theatre is oustanding from a viewing and acoustic perspective, the players were top class and the setting in Balboa park was incredible. Online odering process is really simple and you simply pick up your tickets at the door just before show time. Sorry that we didn't arrive a few hours before the show to give us more time to wander through Balboa Park - it is simply gorgeous. If you are looking to add a special event to your San Diego experience this is a perfect choice.

“Fantastic time no matter which theater”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

We have been fortunate to see Shakespeare in the outdoor theater and another excellent show in the small theater in the round. I would say there is not a bad seat in either and the entertainment value is a 10.

“Beautiful space and grounds, great productions”
Reviewed May 21, 2013

I've seen two shows at the Old Globe and had a great time during each visit. Both shows have been in the enclosed theatre, which has a distinct 60s/70s vibe on the interior, but it doesn't take away from the productions. Seats are comfortable and the house is set up so that there really aren't any bad seats (and their online ticketing process is great-- you can actually choose to see what the stage will look like from the seat you pick). The theatre grounds are beautiful and the buildings evoke the British theatre from which it takes its name.

Their productions are top-notch and if you get to the theatre early, you can take in some of Balboa Park first, making for a perfect outing.
