Thanks for your comments about your sail on Stars & Stripes and we're happy to hear you enjoyed working with our crew.
My husband’s birthday was such a special day because of Lynn, his wife and the entire crew of Stars and Stripes! The weather had threatened to be rainy but that did not stop us (the weather in San Diego is almost always great), and the sun came out, we caught a nice wind and we were off. What an experience to be on an America’s Cup boat! There is nothing like it. We all had the opportunity to take the helm and to “grind” if we wanted to. No pressure whatsoever but so much fun! Our entire family of five and a few others made for a group that was not too large to fit everyone comfortably. The scenery from the San Diego Bay was gorgeous and we sailed right under the Coronado Bridge.
This was a fabulous trip and we would do it again in a heartbeat! Thank you so much Stars and Stripes.
Thank you so much for the wonderful review! I'm so glad your husband got to celebrate his birthday aboard Stars & Stripes USA-11. And thank goodness that the rain didn't materialize! Wind must have been out of the South for us to be able to zip under the Coronado Bridge and take a look at the numerous Navy Ships, always fun and interesting. We look forward to seeing you again! Gratefully, Lynn
This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience from start to finish. I arrived early to hear the optional history on the America’s Cup and was rewarded by a very interesting talk with some great slides.
I liked the fact that there was no mucking around on this trip. In what seems like 10 minutes after stepping on the boat you are out on the harbour under sail.
The crew were excellent, not only providing easy to understand sailing instruction but also giving a history on the many landmarks you will cruise past and describing the numerous other craft you will see on the water. San Diego Harbour is busy!
Participation is encouraged, both grinding on the winches and steering the helm. It’s a lot of fun that anyone can do but is optional if you just want to sit back and enjoy the view. It’s an especially good experience for families with school age kids.
You are encouraged not to use you phone to take photos so you don’t run the risk of it going over the side. Instead they have a dedicated crew member taking photos all day and will send you a link at the end of the day. They say they will take a lot of photos and they are not joking. Not only do they photograph you sailing but also literally anything on the Harbour or shore that is of interest. The photos are excellent quality and supplied at no charge.
Finally when you get back on shore you’re invited to watch a slideshow of the day’s action while you sip on a beer or wine.
Hi Mark, It was nice having an Aussie onboard! And thank you for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review. As you gathered, we feel so fortunate to be able to share the experience of Stars & Stripes which includes raising and trimming sails and of course taking the helm. We are also glad to share knowledge of the America's Cup history, so guests have an idea of the boat's historical significance. Sailing on San Diego's busy bay almost always offers plenty to see. Glad you had fun! -Lynn
Friendly knowledgeable crew and magnificent sailboat. It feels like driving a formula 1. These boats are the peak of monohulls. I could not stop smiling. My trip was a few years ago. The date selected below is in error because it Didn't go back far enough but wouldn't accept my comments without selecting a date.
Thank you for the nice review! I'm glad you have a lasting memory of sailing Stars & Stripes USA-11. Our boat was built to be raced right here in San Diego, more specifically in our light to moderate winds. We feel fortunate to be able to share the hands on experience with guests like you! Again, thanks for taking the time to write a review. - Lynn
My wife and I were in San Diego for a large conference. We specifically planned our travel to arrange time for an afternoon on Stars and Stripes. It was the best. The crew/owners are wonderful. I asked a lot of questions about Stars and Stripes, sailing and the harbor. They are all happy to help and provide information.
Thank you for writing the great review! I'm so glad you and your wife had a wonderful time aboard our Stars & Stripes USA-11. We take it as a great compliment that you would plan your trip to allow enough time to sail with us, and we hope you will be able to join soon again. Gratefully, Lynn
Feel the power and excitement of this sail......so fun, get involved in the cranks controlling the sails....and the power of the wind. LIfe is about creating great memories and this was one for us.
Thank you for writing such a wonderful review. I agree with you, life is about creating great memories. By allowing guests to "crew" for an afternoon sail on San Diego Bay aboard Stars & Stripes USA-11, we have hoped that guests like you would have indelible memories. Thank you for letting us be part of your memories here in San Diego. -Lynn
Our whole family had a great time sailing around the bay. Everyone including the kids (8 & 10) were able to take a turn at the helm. The environment was very welcoming and the crew is great. I highly recommend making this part of any trip down to San Diego!
I'm so glad all of you had a great time sailing aboard Stars & Stripes! And thank you for the nice review. It's always fun to see kids the age of yours actually become part of our crew by grinding pedestals to turn the winches and take a turn at the helm! The history of the America's Cup goes all the way back to 1851. The America's Cup is the oldest ongoing sporting event for a trophy in the world! It's older than the modern Olympics by 45 years! We love sharing this wonderful historical race boat, and we're glad your family had a good time. Thanks Again, Lynn
