We loved the two submarines. It was fascinating to compare and contrast USA and USSA subs from about the same era and get a good feel for how it must have been to serve in them. We loved the decommissioned San Francisco ferry that houses the shop; it was a marvellous old ship. And (almost) finally, the two sailing ships, one old and one relatively new. The staff on board both were well informed and happy to share their knowledge.

But the highlight for us must have been the trip on the old pilot boat. For only $5 more, we got a 40 minute trip around the bay with commentary. It must be the cheapest way to see the Bay and we loved it. I'm not sure if we would even have realised it was available if we hadnt stopped off at the tourist information office adjacent to the museum where one of the advisors told us about the pilot boat. They also sell discounted tickets for a number of attractions and we bought our Disney tickets there for our trip later on at a $5 discount. Not much but the best deal we saw anywhere.

“Must Not Miss”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

When you consider the cost of some attractions, this one is a steal! We started our tour on Star of India and my husband asked rather disappointingly if that was it. No I said, there's more. In fact there's lots more. We spent a very pleasant, hassle free, Sunday afternoon just wandering around the ships and submarines. We found everything fascinating and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The opening times are very convenient too, no 9 to 5 here! Just a few days later, we visited the Queen Mary in Long Beach and found the submarine closed for refurbishment. Thank heavens we had already had the delightful experience of visiting the Maritime Museum of San Diego!

“Thankful not to have been a submariner!”

The museum has several real decommissioned vessels and a few replicas. Very interesting and more to see than one has time for unless you arrive early and stay late.

This is an amazing opportunity to see and actually climb around many types of vessels. Wonderful and educational displays throughout. Purchase the Bay Tour boat ride too. This gives a real seance of the history and location of the bay. Don't miss this spot if you are at all interested in maritime history.

I love this amazing museum. From tall ships to submarines, it gives great insights into a broad spectrum of maritime history. Wear comfortable shoes and enjoy! The docents are great and friendly and ready to answer any questions you have.
