A collection of historic ships, rather than the more common land-based maritime museum, it gives a full account of the development of San Diego as a maritime city. Exhibits include the world's oldest ship that sails regularly (the Star of India, 1863), the replica 18th Century Royal Navy frigate used in the production of the film "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World", several nineteenth and twentieth Century vessels including US and Soviet submarines from the Cold War period and Americas Cup yachts.

For me this was just OK, but my husband would probably give it high marks. The Star of India is amazing, lots of history there. There are several other boats, including a Soviet submarine. My husband loved that but I couldn't stay down there due to claustrophobia! They also have the ferry Berkeley, which was used in 1906 to evacuate earthquake victims from San Francisco. There are many nautical exhibits and I'm sure my husband could have spent more than the hour or so that we did there. The harbor scenery was beautiful though. This experience would probably have been enhanced had there been tour guides or audio guides, but I know places like this are strapped for money. The harbor scenery is beautiful.

For around 14 bucks, you get to explore one of the world's oldest sailing ships--the Star of India, which is purported by many to be haunted; the tall ship from the movie Master and Commander; a Soviet-era nuclear submarine; an enormous old ferry; and a couple of luxurious yachts.

i was a bit nervous about going into the submarine, but it was well worth it. if youre like me, submarines are a completely foreign adventure. i was shocked at how cramped it was, and was offered the opportunity to put myself in the shoes of the men who had served int hat very submarine. also, its pretty cool that it was a russian submarine captured by the us during the cold war! all the writing inside is in russian!

Took the whale watching tour and the maritime museum is included in cost. Several ships and subs to see. Lots of historical information. Hands on activities for kids.
