Mission Beach is a great area and nice sand. Like most public beaches there was a fair bit of garbage bits around and huge piles of seaweed bundles to avoid but the water was nice and the kids enjoyed their first time in the ocean. We had to have some patience trying to find parking as we only had Saturday to do the beach thing and we went in mid afternoon.

In my mind, Mission Beach has always had eccentric inhabitants. Compared to the 70s, it is clean, modern, and inviting - and a bit upscale that what it used to be. Surfers are still there and lots of families. I saw one house on the boardwalk for $4.8 million. Another for $379,000. I ate at Kojack's, a family owned Greek restaurant. They still serve great food!

The Mission Beach area is a classic older CA beach area. The beach is beautiful as all beaches in So CA are. The area around, including the small amusement park is a little run down. There are shops (t-shirt, ice cream, sundries) beside the park and then some nicer shops within. The rides in the park are equivalent to what you might find in a traveling carnival. Except the roller coaster. A classic wooden coaster that has been refurbished. Like walking into history - A must do if you visit. the price was $6-$8 per ride depending on how many tickets you purchased. Most of the other rides were $2-$5. Careful timing when you visit as everything shuts down pretty early (9:00 pm). If you only have time for one pier/beach front amusement stop I would recommend the pier in Santa Cruz - way better!
