Owner description: Founded in 1916, the Zoo has been an icon in San Diego for nearly 100 years—and an absolute must-see in Southern California. Spend the day monkeying around in our tropical oasis as you visit beautiful habitats that are home to gorillas, eagles, tigers, sun bears, Asian leopards, rare reptiles, a palette of colorful birds, and more. Visit the Australian Outback to delight in our colony of 24 koalas, and travel along Panda Trek to experience giant pandas and other animals that share their bamboo forest habitat. Go back in time through Elephant Odyssey to discover what animals used to roam Southern California and see what the elephants are up to. Enjoy a guided tour on a double-decker bus or the scenic view from the Skyfari aerial tram, and dine in the peaceful surroundings of Albert's Restaurant. Discover the wonders of wildlife with animal encounters, interactive experiences, and keeper chats. A leader in animal care and conservation, the San Diego Zoo is at the heart of the San Diego experience.

Visited the zoo july 2010. The zoo was well kept and nice, but there was to many emty "cages" on the day of our visit. The park is unorganized so dont forget your map. There was not a main route to follow to ensure a sight of every animal. The backstagepass was a great experience.

Very well designed place for animals and for people.
Animals look like they have enough creature comforts and space, they look well cared for.
For us humans the bus tour is informative, takes you everywhere, after that you know where exactly you'd like to go then on foot. There is also express bus that will take you with less stops around the zoo. There is also aerial tram (like at a ski resort), the ride is enjoyable, but you hardly see any animals from above.
There are plenty of eateries and bathrooms, which is important since there is enough to do for the whole day, and easy access for kids, strollers and all, people with physical limitations too.
You enjoy the animals, the plants, and also get educated and encouraged to recycle and conserve natural resourses; the stores are well stocked, and you are reminded that all the money you spend in the zoo goes to care for animals, pay for research and conservation of nature.

One of the best zoos I have ever visited. Was really fun, and a great experience. I could see the delight in my wife's eyes.
Now I need to take my daughter, who is 2 years old!

I would recommend a must go to people who love animals.

We visited the zoo on a Friday in October and it was not very busy. This was great for us because we didn't have to fight crowds. We took our time and got to see all of the exhibits. The tram ride came with our ticket purchase and that was very helpful in traversing the steep incline to the other half of the zoo. I recommend taking the tram to the top and working your way down.

We visit the San Diego Zoo every couple of years when we visit San Diego. Our children absolutely love the SD zoo and they have traveled several continents and visited many zoos throughout the world (you can tell we are animal lovers). By far, we like the SD Zoo the most, for it is clean, its preservation efforts, the habitat layouts, and that it is environmentally conscience. The polar bear plunge is just amazing in terms of its layout and how the visitors can see them so close (when they get to the glass to check us out) above and below the water. A must visit when visiting San Diego.
