I am in love with San Diego. The zoo is at the Balboa park, you can plan a day visiting the zoo and hit some museums. Highly recommend getting the costco San Diego City Card for some savings if you're on a sight seeing visit.
A bit sad the pandas were gone though :( but regardless, they got lots of amazing animals to see. The food isn't great though.

Walking through this zoo you will enjoy trails, lots of shrubs, trees, flowers, winding paths that lead you to small areas were you can enjoy seeing various animals. Unlike most zoos the focus is on the hilly trails and shrubs. There are a variety of animals but not a lot of them, so you may need to stand around and wait awhile before you see the one, two or three animals they have at each stop

I arrived on a Thursday to San Diego. I have been many times and immediately wanted to go visit the zoo. Absolutely one of my favorite places to visit in the world. I arrived at the zoo around 4pm(it stays open until 9pm). Glad I got there later, the crowds start to decrease around 5:30 or so. Going later in the day is great since there are times where you can actually see things on your own without a crowd or screaming kids around.

The zoo was doing some renovating of the children's zoo area so that was closed. Everything else was great though. The new Africa Rocks area is done really well. The new habitats are great for some of the large mammals.

Warning for those who have never been, this zoo has some hills, you can get a real workout while walking around.

One of the best zoos in the entire country. I recommend riding the bus through the different areas to get a handle on where you want to start. Certain days the zoo gets extremely busy and plan to drink plenty of water. Great for kids of all ages!

We were visiting from Houston and were blown away by the San Diego Zoo! I suggest getting on the double decker bus tour first thing when the gates open at 9. We rode that and most of the animals were out eating and very active! It also gave us a lay of the land and we were able to plan our day of where we wanted to spend our time. We took the sky tram from the front of the part to the back and because our stroller was under 23” wide, we were able to fold it up and bring it with us. We worked out way from the top/back of the park by the polar bears downhill to the front. We saw several families struggling up hill. The evenings are so nice at the zoo!
