Owner description: Founded in 1916, the Zoo has been an icon in San Diego for nearly 100 years—and an absolute must-see in Southern California. Spend the day monkeying around in our tropical oasis as you visit beautiful habitats that are home to gorillas, eagles, tigers, sun bears, Asian leopards, rare reptiles, a palette of colorful birds, and more. Visit the Australian Outback to delight in our colony of 24 koalas, and travel along Panda Trek to experience giant pandas and other animals that share their bamboo forest habitat. Go back in time through Elephant Odyssey to discover what animals used to roam Southern California and see what the elephants are up to. Enjoy a guided tour on a double-decker bus or the scenic view from the Skyfari aerial tram, and dine in the peaceful surroundings of Albert's Restaurant. Discover the wonders of wildlife with animal encounters, interactive experiences, and keeper chats. A leader in animal care and conservation, the San Diego Zoo is at the heart of the San Diego experience.

The San Diego Zoo is huge! That's the first and most memorable part of the zoo. I don't know if it's the actual size or the layout that gives the appearance. You must take no less than 4 - 6 hours to see this place. My wife and I are fairly active adults. We both hit the gym about 3 days per week, but walking this place took a bit out of us. The animal selection is intriguing.

Know that you have the option to take guided tours, for an additional cost of course, but we prefer to be on our own schedule. One of the ticket office attendants suggested a particular walking route so we would not be on a constant uphill climb. Ask someone who works at the zoo which is the best route. It definitely helped us out. The zoo has some massive inclines. The route we took allowed us to use a series of escalators.
We spent four hours in the zoo and still did not see the reptile nor insect exhibits, but that was just fine for my wife's liking.

HUGE Zoo - lots of walking, but stroller friendly! Neat exhibits, lots of different animals & information. NEVER hot due to California coast breeze. Parking could have been better

We have been to many zoos in our time but never one the size of this! It has soo much to see, theres a skysafari which gives you the opportunity to see animals from above, plus a tour bus for free which covers around half of the park, the other half you have to walk, def do the bus as you simply dont have time to walk the whole park in one day! Def worth a visit if you are in San Diego!

Hands down the best zoo that I have visited. Make sure you block off about 5 hours to walk around the whole park. They do let you bring in backpacks, so stick a couple bottles of water in there for the day. All of the exhibits were open but we were unable to see the polar bears, not sure if they had them out or put away. Great fun for a couple or family.
