Owner description: Founded in 1916, the Zoo has been an icon in San Diego for nearly 100 years—and an absolute must-see in Southern California. Spend the day monkeying around in our tropical oasis as you visit beautiful habitats that are home to gorillas, eagles, tigers, sun bears, Asian leopards, rare reptiles, a palette of colorful birds, and more. Visit the Australian Outback to delight in our colony of 24 koalas, and travel along Panda Trek to experience giant pandas and other animals that share their bamboo forest habitat. Go back in time through Elephant Odyssey to discover what animals used to roam Southern California and see what the elephants are up to. Enjoy a guided tour on a double-decker bus or the scenic view from the Skyfari aerial tram, and dine in the peaceful surroundings of Albert's Restaurant. Discover the wonders of wildlife with animal encounters, interactive experiences, and keeper chats. A leader in animal care and conservation, the San Diego Zoo is at the heart of the San Diego experience.

“This is a great zoo”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

The zoo was great but a day is plenty. We did several behind the scenes tours. They cost extra but it was well worth it getting to see animal up very close and we got to feed and pet a Rhino.

“Amazing and huge!!”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

We've gone to a lot of great zoos, but San Diego is definitely big. Prepare to walk a lot, there are bus that drive to different areas. My children loved all the animals and experience. Food is Okay there, typical park food. Loved having the red shirt volunteers around when viewing animals. They tell you the animals name and background story and age. It make the experience so much more personal and it great having all these interesting facts about all the animals they care for there. Definitely happy to have an awesome zoo like that in So Cal and being a member supporting a place like that make me feel like my money is going to a great cause.

“It's the best zoo around!”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

There is always something fun to do at the SD Zoo. Shows to watch, bands to listen to, various animals with trainers to learn about....critters are everywhere! Whether you are from out of town or live nearby it's a great place spend the day and see amazing animals, do a little shopping and dining with plenty of healthy choices. You can walk or ride the bus or take the skyfari. Don't forget to visit the children's zoo to see all the babies and also pet a deer or sheep. The botanical gardens are amazing. Rain forests, lush landscaping throughout for your enjoyment.

“Barely Fit Highlights In a Day”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

There is so much to explore at the zoo. We took advantage of the guided bus tour and express bus towards the end after we had hiked through most of the zoo. Certain animals would not be active or be seen during the day if they are nocturnal. So if you want to see any animal in the cat family, you would need to stick around when the sun goes down. Be sure to check out the nighttime zoo entertainment, which happen to have China Celebration when we went.
