Owner description: Founded in 1916, the Zoo has been an icon in San Diego for nearly 100 years—and an absolute must-see in Southern California. Spend the day monkeying around in our tropical oasis as you visit beautiful habitats that are home to gorillas, eagles, tigers, sun bears, Asian leopards, rare reptiles, a palette of colorful birds, and more. Visit the Australian Outback to delight in our colony of 24 koalas, and travel along Panda Trek to experience giant pandas and other animals that share their bamboo forest habitat. Go back in time through Elephant Odyssey to discover what animals used to roam Southern California and see what the elephants are up to. Enjoy a guided tour on a double-decker bus or the scenic view from the Skyfari aerial tram, and dine in the peaceful surroundings of Albert's Restaurant. Discover the wonders of wildlife with animal encounters, interactive experiences, and keeper chats. A leader in animal care and conservation, the San Diego Zoo is at the heart of the San Diego experience.

Very large zoo BUT $40 a person is a bit much. We went to see the Tigers, but they can only be seen when the trainer comes out to feed them. she said they prefer to stay uptop where their toys are unless she lures them out with food. SO move the toys down so we can see them? Lots of walking here. Zoo was clean and well kept.

This was our first visit to the SD zoo and glad we did so.

First of all, the zoo is located in Balboa Park which is already a huge place to begin with. So beware and bring walking shoes. There will be hills and lots of area to cover. For those that require it, there are strollers to rent along with electric scooters for the disabled.

The Zoo is not cheap by any means (around $70 for 2 adults - we found a $4 off coupon at a SD attractions display in our hotel). However, considering how big the place is, it seems fair.

It can be an intimidating place to visit when you have no idea what you want to visit and we did some investigating online before arriving.

-take the Skyfari and check things out while going over the zoo. You can get an amazing view of the property and see if anything peaks your interest.
-take the guided double decker tour bus. This will show you approx. 70% off the exhibits and areas which will further clarify what you may want to visit with the time you have.
-pack water and snacks. We brought a small collapsible cooler and had bottles of water and snacks. Otherwise, you will be buying fast food and paying $$$.
-bring a hat and wear sunscreen. The sun is deceiving and a sun burn can be easily had even when it's not hot.

The next time we are in town, we'll definitely go again and see the things we missed. We were there for 5 hours and probably covered 1/3 of the place.

I live in the Midwest and have been to the Omaha Zoo, Kansas City Zoo and Chicago Zoo. I came to see the pandas and khoala bears. The zoo has nice scenery. Be prepared to walk hills up and down. There is a cute animal show with a seal. Food was typical expensive zoo food. We were done with the zoo in three hours. Not much there to see. We were informed we need to go to the Safari Park if we wanted to see more animals. We already paid $40 for each admission and $25 on lunch there. Like I said before, we came to see the pandas khoala bears. We most likely will not return.

We went early in the morning and it had just rained, it was a bit slippery in places but glad as by 12 it was boiling and there are some killer hills, I suggest getting orientated ,decide where and what to see b4 wondering around we found the signs on the trails confusing. There are guides to direct you but by the time we got situated we were too tired and hot to bother going to petting area which we should have done first. Food was better than expected at the cafes pricey but good portions and flavor

Had an amazing time at the zoo. It is everything you'd expect it to be, and I would recommend this over Sea World any day!
