Owner description: Now a museum and state historical landmark, this is one of only two California houses recognized by the U.S. Commerce Department as being haunted.

The walking tour was very informative and interesting. I liked the fact that the guide was dressed in period costume. Apparently, it was one of the first brick houses in the area of it's kind. Also interesting, is that the owner bought the property for $1.50! It served the public with a courthouse, a theater, and a general store, as well as being a residence. Lot's of original items remain in the house. They say if you smell lavender, it is the ghost of Mrs. Whaley, as this is the oil she used to wear. They also say that one of the most active ghosts is the family dog, "Dolly", and that she has been know to lick a few toes sticking out of sandals, whilst during a tour! Fascinating!

A day in Old Town with a visit to the Whaley House is about as much fun as the kids could want. But this visit isn't just for the kids! If you're young at heart, this is for you!

We had seen this place featured on tv's ghost stories so when we went to San Diego and visited Old Town I had to go in...the stories the staff member shared with us was interesting but other than feeling a slight dizziness in the general store (which was probably due to the area going through the hottest temperatures in years!!), no ghosts were detected.

Very interesting tour, we love ghost stories so hearing about the hauntings didn't hurt!

I was more interested in the historical significance of this mansion. Considering the era it was built, this place would have been a spectacle.
