This has restaurant been around for a long time. They have now added a daily Happy Hour and a Wine Tasting the 1st Wednesday of the month, plus Breakfast on Saturday mornings. They have a great menu with wonderful appetizers that can be meals in themselves. Luis is really trying to accommadate all arenas...try it!!

We are new to Topeka and sampling the area "fine dining" restaurants (loosely termed for sure). New City Cafe caught our eye so we decided to give it a try on a Friday night. Decor is mismatched - a few good ideas to create a mood but it's too eclectic (not in a good way in my opinion). The large freezer case that spans nearly the whole width of the dining room is honestly an eye sore. Apparently it's used at lunch time but when not in use, it's just big and empty. Service was of medium quality - not bad, not outstanding. Food was also mediocre in flavor and presentation. Portion sizes were adequate but the food was still overpriced considering the atmosphere, presentation, and overall feel of the place. It's a strip mall restaurant that is really trying to be "fancy" but it misses the mark.

New City has opened for breakfast on Saturday from 8 AM to 11 AM. Quite an assortment of breakfast items prepared to order. Biscuits & Green Chile Sausage, Smoked Salmon eggs benedict, 2 types of pancakes, Croissant French Toast with rum caramelized bananas. and omelets all freshly prepared. Don't overlook the freshly cooked scones, muffins & danish.
Very relaxed atmosphere. Great place for Saturday morning breakfast.

Having been in Topeka for 2 weeks we tried this dining facility twice in two weeks. Both times the service was extremely slow. Sure we had a table of 10 and 12 each time but just to get drinks took forever. The food came out slowly with some members sitting with food for 5 mins before the others got their meals. The "dinner" salads are very mediocre. Basic lettuce with some berries thrown in. The Steak has excellent flavor however and was the hit of the table. The prices are over the top for the food, location, service and atmosphere. The decor is really silly, as they tried to go for a modern, urban, casa vibe but couldn't pull it off, especially with the large deli counter still in the middle of the restaurant, extremely strange sexy (that do not match anything else in the restaurant) woman photos decorating the walls and the trek through the kitchen to the bathroom. The menu is also very limited with a couple basic entree, some salad choices and a few appetizers. We went to this restaurant because several of the trip adviser people had placed this as a 5 star. Yet when we arrived once on a Friday night and once on a Saturday night, the restaurant had us and one other table each time. Unless they have more business at the downtown location, or there is some fundamental reason the restaurant didn't do much business those particular weekends, this place can't survive. Local clientele is what keeps you in business, not business travelers like us who happen to stop in occasionally and clearly this isn't an extremely popular restaurant with the locals.

I have been there for lunch and dinner, and been very satisfied.
For dinner they serve their nicest menu. Their soups are superb (try the black bean soup... my wife always goes for the soup of the day). They add a Caribbean touch to most their dishes. I always order fish or seafood, and love their selection. My carnivore friends ordered the chateaubriad last time we were there, and were quite impressed.
Their creme brulee is off the charts. I could go there just for that.
For lunch they have the same menu, but they also have lunch specials for working people that have to be in and out. Its pretty healthy (soups, salads, sandwiches, and some nice dishes) and portions are very decent.
I am not much of a cocktail person, but their bar sure seems like a nice place to talk and have a couple of drinks.
Not a place you would expect to find in Topeka, KS.
