There is literally nothing else in the world like this experience.

Do it from start to finish, Nashville to Natchez. Make the stops. Take several days. Go alone. Turn off the cell phone. Listen to your Soul and it's Creator.

Prepare for the epiphanies by studying the immense history of the road and the region it traverses. From Abraham Lincoln, to the brutality of the Highwaymen that ruled the road in rebellion. The history is thick in the air. The reflection compelled as you make the journey will be as epic as the roadway beneath your tires.

The single best travel experiences of my life have been on the "Ghost Road: of the Natchez Trace.

Places you MUST stop:

Leiper's Fork
Water Valley Overlook
Jackson Falls (Take the short hike)
Tobbaco Farm / Old Trace Drive
Fall Hollow
Merriweather Lewis (One of History's great mysteries)
Metal Ford (Where they strategized the defeat of the Brittish in New Orleans)
Rock Spring
Cave Spring
Pharr Mounds
The Graves of the Unknown Confederates
Witch Dance (Study the legend)
French Camp (Epic History and Food)
Cypress Swamp
Ross Barnett Reservoir (Get in the water)
Lost City of Rocky Springs (Another History Mystery)
Windsor Ruins
Rosswood Plantation
The Old Country Store ("World's Best Fried Chicken" - Alton Brown)
Natchez, MS

And that's not ALL of it. (Just the "Must Stops")

Truly a great National Park !

For me, this was a neat little trip down American History Memory-lane. Great for random history facts and very scenic trip through three states. The bridge over the Tennessee river, the Meriwether Lewis grave, and lots of deer. And the gas station at the beginning of the trace (outside Nashville) always seems to have very cheap gas). I've done the trip, now, twice, both times in winter and it's still a nice drive.

Pros: scenic views, wildlife (wild turkeys, birds, raccoon, deer, squirrel...), fall colors

Cons: some people drive to fast

I highly recommend it. The views are really beautiful and very peaceful

Beautiful scenery and historic landmarks. Roadway well maintained. Be sure to stop at a Visitor's Center to see the significance of "The Trace", then get a map and explore. Very low key in the off season.

I've ridden long sections of the Trace several times on my bicycle while working in Tupelo and it never disappoints. If you start just south of Tupelo's city limits, traffic is very light and scenary is excellent.
