“Not Your Typical Hotel”
Reviewed June 10, 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Club Quarters for a couple of nights while attending our son's college graduation. While I booked months in advance, this was the only hotel in the downtown Boston area where I could get a room for under $300 that weekend... in fact, it was under $200.

This is a really nice place, but you must accept the fact that it is not a typical hotel. When they say "Club" Quarters, they aren't getting. Companies can join and get special rates, and if your company is a member, you can get even better rates on weekends. They also have branches in NYC, Washington, London, and elsewhere. If you are a business traveler staying by yourself, this would be a fabulous place to stay even if your company isn't a member But, the rooms are small... everything is reduced in size; the room, the bed, the bathroom, etc. The bed, for example, is a full size bed... not even a queen. If you're traveling by yourself this would not be an issue, but traveling as a couple, the whole room got a bit tight. But everything was clean and completely up to date.... even a flat screen television, though, like everything else, it was small.

I loved the way they set up the amenities. Need an extra pillow... or an ironing board... or whatever? No need to call housekeeping... there's a closet on each floor that has this stuff and you just help yourself. Want some fresh drinking water? There's a water dispenser in the hall with bottles available... so you can make your own bottled water for free. Downstairs, the lobby is also tiny, but there is a "club room." TV, reading materials, coffee all the time... it's a really nice place. The coffeemaker is one of those Keurig machines so it only makes 1-2 cups at a time... no problem with it sitting around getting burned all day. Other amenities are available too... they even have iPad's available for loan, for example. There are computers downstairs in case you need them and one is reserved solely for printing boarding passes during certain periods.

There is a bar/restaurant connected to the lobby on the first floor. It's a nice place, but stay away from it on Saturday nights unless you like loud Karaoke.... I mean really loud. No noise filtered up to our room, but if you are looking for someplace to have a quiet nightcap, this is not it.... at least not on Saturdays. By Sunday this had all cleared out and it was pretty pleasant, but still not as quiet as the lobby bar at a top hotel.

The staff was extremely friendly and helpful... couldn't have been nicer... and that's a little strange for a downtown Boston hotel. The hotel is a bit of a hike to the nearest subway station....may be a 5 to 10 minute walk, but you can reasonably walk to the blue, green, red and orange lines. The nearest is the blue line so getting to/from the airport is a snap. BTW, if its a nice day and you are up for a little adventure in going to the airport, you can walk down to the waterfront and take a water taxi over for $10/person. Reservations suggested.

The hotel is in the financial district and there is not much open on weekends in the immediate vicinity... especially on Sunday. But it's a reasonable walk (again, about 10 minutes) to the waterfront (where there is a Panera"s) or to Faneuil Hall.

If the rooms hadn't been so small I would have given it 5 stars. You need to know that going in, but this is the reason the prices are so reasonable (at least by downtown Boston standards). It's a reasonable tradeoff, and a fabulous deal especially if you are traveling alone.

The Club Quarters Boston is exactly what you'd expect a Club Quarters to be: small, well-appointed rooms, great staff, and an excellent location. I had a hard time locating the hotel and hotel parking but had a positive experience once I managed to get there and check-in; I would not expect anything else from Club Quarters. The only small issue that I had was one of room location: they were unable to locate a standard room on an upper floor on the first night of my stay and placed me on the first floor, just a few feet up from the street, on an alley, above dumpsters. As a solo traveler, I was uncomfortable with this room location and paid to upgrade my room to a suite on an upper floor. The hotel staff was very understanding of this preference and even offered to move my things to an open standard room on a higher floor for the remainder of my stay. Overall, this hotel provided the same positive experience that I've come to expect from Club Quarters.

Room Tip: Suites have a kitchen with fridge, sink, and utensils.

The location is advisable for those who want to stay close to the historical sites, although there isn't good support for feeding, mainly at late night. The rooms are very tight and a small refrigerator would be very useful.

Great hotel, very helpful staff especially Julian de Lacaze. We needed a room for three and were accommodated. The restaurant/bar next door was great too. This hotel is within walking distance of everything one might want to walk to in downtown Boston - and we did. Prices here made the trip affordable and the service was a plus.

I travel a lot and this experience will cause me to look at Club Quarters elsewhere. A very, very good value compared to all the other downtown hotels. Walking distance to everything you'd want to see and do in downtown Boston.

We were looking for a hotel in downtown Boston for Memorial Day weekend and were having trouble finding anything "decent" for under $200. Found Club Quarters on Expedia for $140/night, which, for its location, was better than anywhere else nearby. Plus, parking on weekends is only $16/night (self parking), which was a steal compared to some other places. So we booked the Club Quarters after receiving a recommendation from a friend and were not disappointed! As other reviews have stated, it's not the easiest place to find. There is a small sign next to the door, and a flag above the door, but otherwise you wouldn't know it was there (and wouldn't necessarily know it was even a hotel). Check-in was painless and they were able to provide us with the mini-fridge that we had requested. We were on the 11th floor right off the elevator. Hallway noise was not a big issue and we couldn't hear anything in any of the other rooms. The room was small, but not as small as I expected. We had our son with us and his pack-and-play and we were able to find a spot to set that up and still have some room to walk around. The room was fairly simple with a desk, bed, TV on the wall, chair (with a work table), and a small bathroom with a shower. I knew to go check the "supply closest" early for extra pillows, which I did and they were there. Going back for something later though, the closet was pretty empty, so if you need something extra, get it early. The TV selection in the room was fine, the bed comfortable, air conditioning worked well. The "Club Room" had a nice supply of free K-Cups for coffee and was a nice inviting room. The bottled water dispenser on each floor was also nice, especially to have some water to take with you while sightseeing. Check-out was painless. A lot of good restaurants in the vicinity, and the location, only three blocks from Quincy Market and the Freedom Trail, and only a block from a T station, could not have been any better. I will definitely look at staying at Club Quarters in the future.

The room was pretty small, but clean. Walls were a little thin but only were woken up a couple times. Location was great! Would stay again for sure.
